Description
In this auction is another RARE ONE from my own collection:
· “DARK HORSE” by George Harrison
· This is a TEST PRESSING for what would be Apple Records 1877, the catalog number for this single title.
· This VERY RARE TEST PRESSING has WHITE LABELS with WRITTEN INFORMATION on the labels.
· The Price Guide for the Beatles American Records by Perry Cox and Frank Daniels contains the following information about test pressings on page 10:
“Prior to the start of a production run, a few test copies of the record are pressed. These are sent to the record company for review. Once approval is received, the factories begin pressing the records. Because test pressings are often made prior to the labels being printed, they often have blank white labels with handwritten information. They should not be confused with promotional discs, which are manufactured in greater numbers after approval of the test pressing.”
“Because test pressings are scarcer than promotional discs and commercial copies of the record, they sell for a premium. Value is determined not only by scarcity, but also by the desirability of the title.”
· The officially-released version of the song was recorded during rehearsals for his 1974 concert tour when Harrison’s exhaustion from overwork contributed to his contracting laryngitis and losing his voice which affected him throughout the tour.
· Many music critics rate “Dark Horse” as one of George’s finest post-Beatles compositions and believe the song would have achieved greater success with a cleaner vocal performance.
· The 45 RPM single became a top-20 hit in the U.S. peaking at #15 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
· The term “dark horse” had long been applied to Harrison due to his success as a solo artist following the break-up of the Beatles in 1970.
· George would come to use the song’s title “DARK HORSE” as the NAME FOR HIS RECORD LABEL!
· The following PRINTED INFORMATION is on both of the white labels:

and
“Available only to technical and other
authorized personnel for the limited
purposes of testing and review. NOT
TO BE PUBLICALLY PERFORMED,
REPRODUCED, SOLD OR
OTHERWISE
DISTRIBUTED.”
· One label has the following HANDWRITTEN INFORMATION:
On one label in black ink:
“Dark Horse”
“George Harrison”
“3:52”
(which is the Play Time)
“An Apple EMI Ltd Record”
There is NO HANDWRITING on the reverse label
· The official single release of “Dark Horse” has the LP version with a play time of 3:52, but promotional copies of the single that were sent to radio stations and DJs had a radio edit play time of 2:48.
· The VINYL is in NICE VG+ CONDITION. There are some light surface hairlines/scuffs but none are significant and none are “feel-able”.
· The LABELS are QUITE CLEAN and WHITE. There is a small mark by a yellow marker on the label with written information.
· This TEST PRESSING RECORD comes with an Apple Records stock sleeve in VG+ Condition.
A VERY RARE TEST PRESSING of a GREAT GEORGE HARRISON TUNE for someone’s vinyl or Beatles collection!!!
