Description
In this auction is a PROMOTIONAL RECORD by PETER AND GORDON. As you may know, PROMO RECORDS were only released by record companies to the radio stations and DJs for airplay and were not made available to the general public.
Here are the details:
· PROMOTIONAL 7-Inch Extended Play Compact 33 RECORD from Peter And Gordon.
· This is CAPITOL RECORDS PRO – 2682.
· It was released in 1964.
· This 7-inch PROMOTIONAL RECORD was released by Capitol Records for radio airplay only to promote Peter and Gordon’s “A World Without Love” LP. So, it was never made available to the general public for purchase.
· The duo of Peter Asher and Gordon Waller were part of the British Invasion of the mid-1960s. In fact, Peter Asher was Jane Asher’s brother. Jane Asher was Paul McCartney’s girlfriend for a while. Peter Asher also played a role in the Beatles’ Apple Corps business venture. In fact, he discovered the talented James Taylor and produced his first LP, entitled simply “James Taylor”, on Apple Records that included the song “Carolina In My Mind”.
· Side 1 is the “INTERVIEW” (open-ended) side and includes their single, “Nobody I Know” from the “A World Without Love” LP.
· The interview is an open-ended interview. Recorded on the vinyl are Peter and Gordon’s responses to the DJs questions that any DJ would read from a script. In this way it sounded to the listening public that the local DJ was actually interviewing Peter and Gordon there in the station studio.
· The Beatles gave away several of their compositions to other artists to record. Lennon and McCartney gave their compositions, “A World Without Love” and “Nobody I Know” to Peter and Gordon who recorded it for their first LP and as the title of their first LP.
· In the interview is a GREAT REFERENCE to the Beatles giving them the songs. Here’s the dialog taken from the interview script and printed below:
DJ: Now, WORLD WITHOUT LOVE was written by Paul McCartney and John Lennon of the Beatles…Gordon, how did you come to record this particular song?
Gordon: Well, we’d known them for a long time and we were playing at this club in London, and they used to come in quite a bit…and we used to talk to them a lot when they came in. And we got this recording contract, and we were talking to them about songs to record and also about the fact that our recording manager didn’t think that any of the songs we did were any good, or not good enough for an “A” side.
Peter: He had sort of given us the contract, but was still thinking about what would be the best “A” side, you know…and then they offered us this song. (referring to “A World Without Love”)
DJ: Uh-huh.
Peter: …and we said “great” and we did it.
DJ: And how about NOBODY I KNOW, your second single.
Peter: Well, again we were looking for a follow-up and we’d written one ourselves.
Gordon: So we went back to this club again. (Laugh)
Peter: (Laugh) We were listening to some other stuff and then they (referring to the Beatles) wrote this one for us and said you know…”How about this one?” And this was the best song we’d been offered, so we recorded it.
(You can read the entire interview on the image of the picture sleeve. You can hear the entire interview and you play the role of the DJ yourself if you are the winner of this auction!)
· Side 2 has 2 additional cuts from the “A World Without Love” LP: “Lucille” and “If I Were You”.
· The PICTURE SLEEVE is included. It is in NICE VG+ CONDITION. One side has the image of the LP cover of “A World Without Love” The other side of the sleeve has the script to the open-end interview. There is some overall aging of the sleeve, but there are NO tears, No seam splits, and NO writing.
