Description

This set of 3 LPs is the complete edition of 153 'progressive piano pieces', produced in Hungary by Hungaroton.
The pianists are Lorant Szucs and Kornel Zemplini.
Bartok writes 'In 1933 my son Peter pleaded with us to teach him the piano. I had a daring idea and undertook this unaccustomed task myself ... the child was given only pieces from Mikrokosmos to play'.
In his most helpful essay Janos Breuer writes 'Virtually from the very beginning, Bartok systematically strove to develop the independence of the two hands through different phrasing, dynamic stresses and varieties of touch'.  Breuer hears sources of inspiration not only from Hungarian folk music but Yugoslav, Serbian, Russian, Rumanian, Bulgarian and American folk songs. He detects the influences of Bach, Couperin, Chopin, Wagner, Schoenberg and the American Henry Cowell. He concludes 'In the miniatures of the Mikrokosmos we find the universality and complete macrocosm of Bartok's music'.
