Description
As you can see from the second photo, I have two different versions of this same recording - - this black one made in Germany and the other yellow one in Italy. The Italian copy is offered in a separate listing. As the review from my Metropolitan Opera Guide to Recorded Opera (not included in this sale) indicates, this was the recording that introduced the world to Maria Callas and remains - - over 60 years later - - the definitive version.
Basically, you should almost always want to have Callas' interpretation of your favorite operas in your collection because she somehow transcends merely singing the role beautifully and actually brings the character to life. In other words, she's the finest actress in opera and brings psychological complexity and dignity to her performances. Now, I never like to promise perfection with records: to me the occasional click or pop is simply expected if you are buy vintage recordings. However, I'm listening to side 1 as I write and it sounds close to perfect, and the other sides really look very good.
