Here we have a 7-inch Berliner single-sided 78 rpm disc by Russian lyrical-dramatic tenor Nikolay Nikolayevich Figner who was born in 1857 and was a personal friend of Tchaikovsky.
He is performing "I Remember An Evening" by Cesar Cui, which was recorded in St Petersburg in early 1901 and has the catalogue number 22601. It seems to have also appeared in a red-label version, as well as (we think) a 10" version. Sorry, we don't read cyrillic, so if we've got any label info wrong, please let us know. Two of Nicolai Figner’s Red Label Celebrity 7" records, 22601 (this one) and 22605, appear on Symposium Record’s CD 1058, and there is a cleaned-up dub from 22601 on YouTube. Figner and his wife Medea Mei were favourites of, and often performed for, the Czar. Figner had, like many of his operatic contemporaries, a magnificent moustache (possibly to make up for the fact that he wasn't particularly tall). His wife (who didn't have a moustache) was a dazzling beauty, who looked rather like Eleanor Bron, the beloved 1960's actress and TV satirist.This 7" single-sided Berliner, made within weeks of the end of the Victorian era, is in remarkably good condition. It's one of the rarest items that bargainsforbadgers has ever sold. Amazingly, for a 123 year old disc, it is in exemplary condition. Lend an ear'ole to the video and you'll hear the unfiltered sound, with no noise reduction, and it's pretty darn good. If pushed, we'd probably rate it as a strong V+ or better, using the VJM grading system (VJM standing for Vague Judgements, Mainly). Fill your boots.
