Blues By Five –‘Boom Boom’ / ‘I Cried’ – Decca 12029 (UK)
Excruciatingly rare Freakbeat single from 1964. Frantic R&B coupled with ultra-rare Andrew ‘Loog’Oldham composition conjuring up haunting images of mid-sixties’ London.
Please listen to snippets of both sides taken from the actual record below:
Blues By Five were an obscure London-based group of five members. This was their only record, released in December 1964. The topside is a British R&B version of John Lee Hooker’s famous song. To me, the flip has the edge. Co-written by the legendary Andrew ‘Loog’ Oldham (with Mike Leander), ‘I Cried’ is a beat ballad somewhat in the style of ‘Tell Me (You’re Coming Back)’ from The Rolling Stones’ first album (also released in 1964).
While ‘Boom Boom’ has been compiled, ‘I Cried,’ to the best of my knowledge, is not available anywhere. Blues By Five supposedly had no connection to the group of the same name whose members in 1960 included Charlie Watts, though it’s not unlikely that someone at Decca – or perhaps Andrew Oldham himself – thought the name was too good to be left sitting on the shelf. A photo of this very obscure group may be found in Terry Rawlings’ book Then, Now and Rare British Beat 1960-1969’ (p.30).
Condition: On visual inspection, VG+. There are some minor scuffs, some very minor marks, and a little dust. I would say it plays much better than the VG+ grade, however. No clicks or scratches at all (and Decca singles from this era were loud and built to last). Winner will not be disappointed with this ultra scarce original. (Please listen to the clips for confirmation!)
The disc comes in an original Decca sleeve, which has some slight wear, creases and two tiny holes (please see scan).
Shipping: $6.50 within Europe; $8.00 rest of the world. Registered and insured shipping is an additional $13.00. Please contact me for combined shipping rates.
Please reply within three days after auction close. Payment via Paypal expected within seven days.
As this is a very scarce item, winner is to pay for shipping via registered post. Will not be held responsible for uninsured shipping.
Happy to answer any questions. Please see my other listings, which include a rare Hendrix album and a rare single by Nirvana (the British group, that is).
Thanks for looking and good luck!
