Dear Music Educator, Student, and Jazz Fan:
Since our first jazz clinic and festival back in 1960, we have tried to tape as much music as possible. Many of the tapes were given away and some were lost, but a great deal was preserved. The idea for a souvenir album has been in the back of my mind for quite some years, so efforts were made to hang onto as much tape as possible.
The huge task of listening to these stacks of tape fell upon Jim Brush (O.C. '59-61), who has participated in,or attended nearly all the festivals. Our records indicate that 84 different high school and college groups have taken part over the years. There have been close to 400 total performances. Needless to say, it was a big task reducing nearly 300 hours of music to the 44 minutes on this recording.
Jim Blossey (now with KOMO Radio in Seattle), who often helped with the festival's production, agreed to do the narration. It was felt that his comments would help tie the transitions together.
This musical momento is sincerely dedicated to the hundreds of students and their directors who have performed at the Olympic College Jazz Festival. Perhaps some portion of this record will take you back to a time when you blew a super great solo, or your band really "had it together," or perhaps when you made a "blooper". It is also sincerely dedicated to the many Olympic College students who, over the years, produced the festivals. Not to be forgotten are the legions of jazz fans in the Northwest who have attended and supported the festival. Their enthusiasm has always been appreciated.

It has been my pleasure to be associated with the Olympic College Jazz Festival in various capacities. This recording highlights performances by many of the winning bands and outstanding soloists who have played at the festivals. Time did not allow the inclusion of many notable performances by runner-up bands, groups that were not finalists, and the many fine students who were judged as the outstanding soloists of the several festivals. There was enough good material available to make this a ten-record set. I hope you enjoy this bit of nostalgia as much as I enjoyed putting it together.
