Description
This is an original copy of Bright Phoebus (LES 2076). This is not to be confused with the 2017 re-release that was removed from the marketplace for legal reasons.
The album has been owned and cherished by me since I purchased it in Basildon Town Centre. I worked nearby and the Independent Downtown store was a favourite lunch break visit. Check out the sticker on the back of the album sleeve. I was not a particular Mike and Lal Waterson fan at the time, but I think it was probably NME that informed me that Martyn Carthy, Richard Thompson and most of Fairport played on the sessions – so that was reason enough to make a purchase.
My wife and I were both HiFi fans and made an early decision that we would never loan our LP’s to anybody else – even very good friends. Consequently I can say that this LP has never been played on anything but an SME/Shure V15/Rega turntable. I hesitate to describe it as ‘mint’ because it is not sealed in its original cellophane, but it is pristine with no visible scratches or finger prints on the surface of the vinyl. The sleeve is unmarked, although, given the age, the corners and the spine show mild scuffs. I still get a sense of mild outrage when I see a person on TV or YouTube fail to handle vinyl by the edges. I/we may be audio snobs, but all our vinyl is still playable and mostly is in excellent condition.
The ‘net informs me Downtown Records, Basildon was opened by Noel Edmunds in 1974. Bright Phoebus was released in ’72, so I think I could date the purchase to ‘early 70’s. I do have some memories of visiting a record seller with a market stall, but I’m not sure if that was the forerunner of the shop. The rectangular gold sticker definitely locates this album as a Downtown store purchase.
Given the rarity value and the potential value of the item,I have priced for Royal Mail Next Day Special Delivery. Local pick-up is also an option. Alternatively I would be happy for a buyer to arrange a pick up if they know of a specialist courier that they would prefer to use.
