Description

KING OLIVER AND HIS ORCHESTRA take on Luis Russell's eerie composition, "THE CALL OF THE FREAKS." Recorded several times over the course of 1929, this Victor version features a stellar array of terrific jazzmen: LOUIS METCALF (cornet), J.C. HIGGINBOTHAM (trombone), CHARLIE HOLMES and TEDDY HILL (saxes), LUIS RUSSELL (piano), WILL JOHNSON (guitar), "BASS" MOORE (tuba) and PAUL BARBARIN (drums).  


The King himself is not heard on this record - or indeed, on anything from his first three sessions on Victor.  Oliver was having severe gum trouble, and had to parcel out the hot cornet duties to other players, in this case the highly capable Louis Metcalf.  Kid "Punch" Miller also deputized for the tooth-troubled Oliver during this time.  


This original 1929 "Hot Dance" "Scroll" Victor V-38039 is in V+ condition.  There is a little moisture damage.  NOT much wear - I would grade the record EE- otherwise.
