Label/Format: RCA Victor – original black ‘red spot’ format with matt, smooth surfaces. Pressed by Decca with the trademark deep ring ridge.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only a tiny few light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. On this evidence, this record looks very little played, but there are some very gentle, mostly surface marks on the record. But still a very fine example of this highly elusive original record with just enough to remind of its considerable age and mode.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Brief Info: This is the first screen version of Ian Fleming’s famous spy in Casino Royale – usually regarded as an unofficial ‘Bond-Film’ as this was a spoof. It starred a vast cast of very famous actors including, David Niven, Peter Sellers and Woody Allen. It even marked a return of one of the most famous ever ‘Bond-Girls’, Ursula Andress who famously appeared in Dr. No in 1962. The film proved relatively successful, even with mixed reviews at the time, but the Soundtrack has always been rated far higher. In fact it has become a much-sort after piece for audiophiles, this regarded at the time as one of the finest recordings put to vinyl at this time. It features a truly gorgeous cover with stunning artwork as seen in my pictures. This part of the album also in fantastic condition and barely aged or blemished at all – this is fantastic piece of art for the cover connoisseur in its own right. The rare 1B Decca record is very clean, but does have some mostly very fine surface marks or hairlines. Most superficial, but there are a small few, mostly light ticks here and there, but most-all of this album plays very well indeed with just enough to politely remind this is a 48-year-old mono record. I suggest from the evidence, this has hardly been played, but maybe a little carelessly, but there is not a great deal unwanted on this rare original. Arguably the rarest vinyl album to carry the ‘Bond’ brand and name, this is seldom seen or offered, most seen are repressings from the modern era. It features the sublime ‘Look of Love’ sung by Dusty Springfield as well. So certainly a piece for soundtrack and Bond collectors. The cover has to be the very best ever made in the long Bond soundtrack album history – the movie official or not – cannot be overlooked.

Cover Grade and Format: MINT(–): a single format with the front laminated with Clarifoil. This covers all the closed edges and ends on the rear spine edge. The main back is matt, smooth and unprotected. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press. Includes the original early Decca-style polylined inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: Absolutely beautiful, a stunning psychedelic Bond-Girl graphic under super-fresh and shiny laminate. This has barely aged one iota with no lifting, barely any hint of dulling, and any creasing simply very fine edge types that are nigh-on impossible to avoid. A real work-of-art that is worth the price alone for any cover or Bond connoisseur. This one has simply ignored it’s great age and there is no disputing the vintage of this one with a 1B stamper original mono record inside.

Cover Back: The back also in fantastic condition, this more than complements the amazing front. Any traces of discolouration are bordering on minuscule with barely even a crease or rub to be seen. A very gentle press on the inside flipback near the top, but this is almost an insult to mention on a cover this age.

Top Edge: Practically as made with super-smooth and untoned laminate. Clarifoil covers have a tendency to bow with natural laminate contraction, but any here is very slight indeed.

Bottom Edge: As above with even the end panel card barely thickened on this more vulnerable storage edge.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with barely any hint wear or thickening. The very fine laminate end strip still very clean and untoned. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression, the ends are deeply pinched in manufacture and both retain superb neat shape. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate.

Corners: All corners again look almost new with no dinks or creases. Superb near mint shape retained.

Cover Summary: A highly memorable original mono prefix cover, this has simply not aged at all and probably not seen light-of-day for decades. This beautiful item should please most-all collectors – try finding a better one.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: only because the back has some natural crinkle. The text-side front is immaculate. Two crisp window circles and clear polylining. All edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: VERY GOOD(++): arguably better. A fine visual copy that is clean with equally fine shine and heavily pressed. A copy with modest plays on all the evidence but there are some mostly very fine surface marks, mostly whispy as seen under bright angled light. A couple of small marks emit a few sporadic and mostly gentle ticks but the vast majority of this mono album plays beautifully. These quality Decca-pressed records were tough and far more able to withstand the rigours of less careful usage. Visually still an impressive record that should please many collectors but not those who want only pristine unmarked vinyl. This being a 48-year-old mono record, good luck finding one.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading for it’s vast majority with not a great deal to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are modest, infrequent and light with a few sporadic ticks here and there. Not too many ‘repeaters’, but a small few – so there are reminders of this record’s age and perilous mono mode, but it will still take an outstanding example to better this really significantly. This will not show up often, that is for certain and a little compromise has to be made on the more elusive titles. Nothing of any great note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record, I am a realist, and will expect the odd light blemish on such records. Compared to most vintage monos around, this is still a very fine example, and soundtracks with some quieter passages are almost the most vulnerable. This could prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended unless silence is mandatory – again good luck finding one.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
