OWED TO MYSELF Lp by CHARLES HILTON BROWN (with ASSAGAI as the backing band). Original Italian pressing on the AMPEX label (30200-SD), from 1974. Italian-only funk and soul grail with incredible rhythm backing by Assagai the cult UK afro rock group. American born fender rhodes player and singer, Charles Hilton Brown recorded this infamous session after meeting up with Assagai during a tour of the UK in the early '70s. Strangely, the Lp was only ever released in Italy. Several killer trax on here... insanely good fender rhodes funk with huge afro horns / thunderous drums and jaw-dropping breaks on ARGUMENTS plus other superb funk trax for DJs on G.R.F. / I'M COMING HOME and the disco cum latin rock influenced MADDOX. Charles also gave the world the ultimate ghetto soul version of the Bill Withers smash AIN'T NO SUNSHINE with blaxploitation strings / slinky female backing singers / Dorothy Ashby style harp / hip hop beats and freestyle rhythms from the funky drummer. Cool vocal soul / rolling breakbeats and spoken word rap midway TELL ME ONCE AGAIN. Musically, this session rivals the French Bobby Boyd Congress Lp on Okapi label. Amazing, Afrocentric / soul brother image of Charles on the front sleeve and great photos of the recording session inside the gatefold. Seldom comes up for sale now. Very rare Lp!!!    

Our record grading: SEALED / M- / VG++ / VG+ / VG 

Vinyl is in shiny, strong VG++ condition with some hairlines and a few, mini spidery pressing blemishes. Light surface noises. A few soft pops. All common for this release as impossible to find mint. The gatefold, soft card sleeve is in VG+ condition overall with general corner and edge wear / ink fading / dirt marks and natural age discoloration from storage (again all common for this release). Small 1st layer abrasion mark to front top left area. Camera flash glare to sleeve and label photo. Very rare Lp!!!
