Label Conditions: All four very clean, fresh and attractive with any of the tiny few spindle marks fine and very light. This superb original double set appears hardly played with top sound quality to match.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Fairly scarce as a first issue. Even more so with a clean, little-worn cover and two near immaculate records. Also harder to find with a superb original unmounted poster.

Brief Info: The third album from this seven-piece band, now just known as Chicago. Another expansive double set now with even more varied music ranging from rock, country to jazz-fusion. They were popular and this sold well again after spending much of 1970 touring. The music includes suites based on the fact, and this original includes the large poster with the band seen with a backdrop of grave stones from the Vietnam war. It’s text gives information on the casualties of all the major American wars and conflicts from the American Revolution to ‘Nam’. The flipside has album lyrics, this impressive poster in superb unmounted condition.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): and arguably undergraded for another wear-prone cover. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, lightly textured surfaces. Printed and made in England by Shorewood with ‘Patents Pending’ text, and includes the CBS promotional inner sleeves and the large poster.

Cover Front: The front is made with single thickness card, hence fragile. But this shows little wear at all and is very clean and fresh. Any creasing gentle and light and showing little.

Cover Back: The back is very similar and the lack of ring wear always welcome news. The spine edge has faded with natural light reaction as many covers do.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault at all, gentle and faint toning traces being critical. The records are stored inside this central area to the right of the fold, making this very vulnerable to damage and tearing. Single thickness spines were hardly up to strength for supporting the weight of two solidly pressed records, but this has barely any hint of stress at all.

Top Edges: Any rub traces very small and light, the front thin edge also neat and sharp with hardly any traces of thickening.

Bottom Edges: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The back edge is closed with a real edge which is straight and unworn, the front thin card has mild traces of thickening and odd tiny burr trace viewed end-on. The records enter from the inside as mentioned already. There is no trimming to any edge of this cover.

Spine and Text: Due to light, the spine has a different hue to it’s colour but any real wear is minimal and light, mainly on the bottom fold. Still solid, straight with barely any compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. Still upright and uncrushed, all text unworn and very well centred too.

Corners: All corners retain very fine (or better) shape with very little wear at all.

Cover Summary: A very fine all-round example of this quite wear-prone and a little under-strength cover to hold two records. With such little wear and no damage, this should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeves: NEAR EXCELLENT: both these unlined CBS promotional inners are fully intact and only marked down for a little creasing to the tops and discolouration mainly to one. No tears, splits or repairs and a mirror-image design pair that promote Simon and Garfunkel albums and known as ‘Sounds of the 70s’.

The Poster: Practically MINT: as made and measuring at a large 32 x 22 inches. Unmounted, clean and fresh with all folds solid with no weakening or splits. One side has the band seen with the graves of Vietnam War solidiers, the other side has the album lyrics. I can hardly imagine finding this scarce large-scale poster better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better still. A very fine visual pair that are very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A pair with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, very light and faint as seen with scrutiny under bright angled light. NO penetrating scratches at all and mostly just fine and whispy surface traces. Visually super records that should please many, if not most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records play even above their high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed this is an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly challenging album. Complex material and intense sound, but all fully focused, precise and sharp, this is a real powerful set and few copies will outperform this UK first pressing significantly I feel sure. I am certain both records have been played very lightly and have been clearly carefully stored and handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these quality, thick records. This set will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
