Description
This is an overall fine U.S. white label promo copy of the rare third and final LP by legendary garage-psych group the Chocolate Watch Band, released in 1969. From San Jose, California, an inland city between San Francisco and Monterey Bay, the group weren't that well represented on vinyl. Their first two LPs both contained their share of solid tracks, but were intermixed with instrumentals by producer Ed Cobb that employed session musicians, and guest vocalists. Their swan song was their only LP to feature the group throughout, though by this point original lead singer David Aguilar was no longer with them. Their sound had by this point evolved towards a more West Coast sound.
One or more convincing counterfeits of this promo pressing exist. Based on my research on Discogs and other sites, original promo copies have the following features, all of which this copy has (see photos):
(1) "Printed in U.S.A." in a small circle in the bottom left corner of the back cover: clear on originals, "quite blurry" on counterfeit(s) (quoting a collector's entry on the RateYourMusic site);
(2) "Manufactured by Capitol Records" verbiage printed near the bottom seam on the back cover;
(3) "For D.J. use" stamped on the back cover;
(4) The following matrix numbers etched in the runout grooves: ST 5153-1 B-11155 (side 1)/ST 5153-2 B-11156 (side 2) - side 1 matrix numbers pictured; and
(5) No printing on the jacket spine (from a 2009 listing on the Popsike site, which quotes the Goldmine guide) - not pictured.
The jacket is in the original shrink wrap (which has small tears in a couple of places). It is close to M- with some light creasing in a couple of corners (EX+). Visually, the disc has some light dinging, scraping, scuffing, and slight loss of glossiness. It plays with some crackling and light popping at the start of side 2, and otherwise with light surface noise -- overall VG+.
I’m in the process of selling off a large personal collection amassed over two decades. All discs have been stored in plastic lined inner sleeves separate from their jackets. The jackets have been stored in plastic sleeves. I have play graded (spot checked) discs except where otherwise noted.
