Label/Format: Blue Horizon – matt, smooth surfaces

Label – IMPORTANT NOTE: As can be seen on my pictures, this is quite a rare one inasmuch side two has the wrong label. Such items are rare, often described as mispressings, which is nonsense. The record is perfectly correct, but has had the wrong label applied to side two. ‘Accept Chicken Shack’ with just the last digit being a ‘1’ instead of a zero, has been used in error, obviously, the record still plays the ‘Christine Perfect’ songs perfectly correct. Such copies of this, and other albums are not seen often and make for a collector’s curio. Conversely, it could possibly be an issue for Blue Horizon purists, that is why I have highlighted the fact. Certainly a likely one for specialist collectors of this prized label. So something different and unusual for sure.

Label Conditions: Both clean, still fresh and attractive with moderate, but fine spindle marks.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Brief Info: This first solo album was issued just after Christine Perfect had left Chicken Shack and before joining Fleetwood Mac – hardly a household name until marrying John McVie and establishing herself in Fleetwood Mac – this Blue Horizon original sold very modestly. Now highly sort-after by Blues and Blue Horizon collectors and justifiably so, this now a legendary album on the famous blues label. The back cover states she was Britain’s only full-time professional female rhythm and blue singer and pianist – she would soon become a blues legend in her own right as the success of Fleetwood Mac flourished and being a stable member for many years. Backed by a host of quality musicians, including her future husband, this is a beautiful album. It includes the hit single ‘I’d Rather Go Blind’ and the beautiful Danny Kirwin song ‘When You Say’ as featured on Fleetwood Mac’s third album ‘Then Play On’. The label error makes it a curio for collectors, and overall a fine very first pressed example. The record has a few sporadic clicks, but overall the sound quality is impressive. Also with a small rub on the cover’s spine centre, this is not a copy for perfectionists, but being as elusive and scarce as it is, sometimes the odd blemish or two can be tolerated more.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a single unlaminated with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Shorewood with ‘Patents Pending’ text and plain white inner sleeve.

Cover Front: One of the classic Blue Horizon front covers and here seen to near maximum advantage. Generally clean, still fresh and attractive with minimal creasing and any rubbing or marks equally so. Under angled light, a little faint dulling just seen, but the lack of ringwear or sticker marks is a major plus on this unforgiving cover. An impressive front that is never easy to find a great deal better.

Cover Back: Largely the same again with any wear issues minor and light.

Top Edge: Solid and straight, any rubbing light and patchy.

Bottom Edge: This more vulnerable storage edge has light to more moderate less patchy rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, still reasonably sharp with little wear. Any thickening or burring light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with any compression light. A little near the centre which has resulted in a rub which as erased a fair degree of the artists name text. This the main reason for the more cautious overall grading.

Corners: Moderate tip rubbing with fine to very fine shape shape.

Cover Summary: A generally strong example of this wear-prone and quite unforgiving, rare early 1970’s cover, one that could still prove difficult to find much better. The main issue being the centrall spine and this missing text. Still a nice looking cover with the main front and back impressive. So not for purists, but many will be more than happy.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: this one came with a white unlined inner. It has two ultra crisp and undamaged window circles, hardly any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs. Any discolouration or ageing, only very light.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. Any surface blemishes are minimal and very faint indeed, in fact both playing surfaces looks superb. Visually a lovely record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This Blue Horizon classic plays mostly up to and most even above it’s high visual grading with not a great deal to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. There are a few sporadic clicks here and there, not many hasten to add, and I am very fussy. One towards the very end of ‘When You Say’ notices most, but there is no jump on my Linn*. Any actual surface sound is minimal, light and very infrequent, but the odd gentle reminder of what you are actually listening too – that being a 45-year-old record. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played modestly and has been reasonably well stored and handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. So a few blemishes, but such is scarcity of this album, it has to be offered for sure. Nothing of any great note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful Blue Horizon classic, one I have rarely seen before. This vintage gem as far more positives than negatives, and even with a small few audio blemishes, it could still prove difficult to find significantly better, it still merits high recommendation as long as ‘perfection’ is not demanded. I enjoyed it a lot being a fan of this woman’s work since my early record-buying days.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Blue moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
