Clarence Carter's final album for the legendary FAME label, 'Sixty Minutes With...' (ACTUALLY, IT WAS HIS FIRST ALBUM FOR THE LABEL, ALTHOUGH THE LAST ONE RECORDED IN THE FAME STUDIOS -- OP.ED) , yielded no hits, as his brand of gutbucket Southern Soul was fast going out of style. Nevertheless, from a creative point of view, this is one of the man's greatest all-around efforts, and a must for those who like their Soul on the raw side.

The stomping opener "I'm the Midnight Special" merges the sounds of a Alabama country church with fatback funk, creating an infectious fingersnapper that should have been huge. Clarence's at his raspiest finest, chipping in his trademark chuckle while the groove train keeps riding on.

The beautiful country soul ballad "Heartbreak Woman" features a poignant, understated guitar, sanctified organ riffs and spinechilling gospel backing vocals. Way rowdier is the uptempo soulful rocker "Sixty Minute Man", and, while clearly patterned on his enormous 1969 hit "Slip Away", it stands well on its own.

"I Love You", the lengthiest cut, shows some signs of polish, with its Philly-styled horns, but Clarence keeps it decidedly Southern, delivering a vocal that sounds creepingly similar to Brook Benton's on "Rainy Night In Georgia".

The stuttering "Love's Trying to Come to You" combines country with soul splendidly yet again, a nice mid-paced ballad cushioned on Clayton Ivey's warm keyboard tones. Equally breezy and joyous is "Next to You", another gorgeous ballad.

"Run out of Time" accellerates the tempo, riding a blues-based rockin' shuffle, and Carter steers thangs back to the funk with the driving, wah-wah heavy "It Was So Nice While It Lasted".

One of Clarence's few message tracks, "And They Say Don't Worry", is a funky little number that takes on the ghetto issue, street crime, taxes, political assassinations and lack of education. Brilliant back-up vocals and a intricate horn chart here.

Carter closes this disc with an unashamedly old-school blues wailer: "I Got Another Woman" is deep, deep soul set to gospel-influenced piano and late night jazz horns.

One of Clarence Carter's greatest albums, and a pinnacle of '70s Southern Soul.

(EXCERPT FROM AN ANONYMOUS ONLINE REVIEW)

This album was my introduction to Clarence Carter back around 1974. His version of Sixty Minute Man is still my favorite ever recorded. There's not a bad track on this album as I remember. A powerful burst of soul awaits those who take the plunge with this fairly obscure album. Carter's voice was at it's peak when he cut this, & the back-up band, including a beautiful brass section, was every inch the equal of anything coming out of Mussel Shoals Alabama. Lovers of Classic Soul can't possibly be disappointed.

·                          CONDITION:

·                          RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant). For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)         The record is pressed on a RELATIVELY  thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type),  vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.

(c)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                          THE COVER

COVER IS NEAR MINT,  STILL IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       Cover has two corners slightly dinged (nothing significant)

-       Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1.

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER
