Description

COLOSSEUM - VALENTYNE SUITE - 1969 FIRST PRESSING - VERTIGO 'SWIRL' LABEL

This is a first pressing of one of those rarest of classics from the late 1960s.

Matrix numbers:

888775 1Y*1 420 1111 (although that last '1' could be '7')

888775 2*Y*1 420 1114 (the '2' has overstamped an incorrect '3' - clearly 2 over 3 and not vice-versa)

I worry when I see 'Mint' as a description of a used record - I've bought 'M-' vinyl with bigger flaws than the very few surface marks on this offer. Let's play safe and call it 'Excellent'. It sounded absolutely superb when played yesterday (for the first time for two decades) for this auction. The labels are near perfect - swirl side A and full track listing on side B. I understand the 'A Philips Record Product' text on the B side label also indicates its scarcity.

The original plastic-lined anti-static bag is excellent.

The gatefold cover is in good condition with some edge wear at the top, and the spine is totally legible. However, there is some water damage to the bottom inch or two - it is not due to neglect, but happened in 1982 when our washing machine burst a hose overnight and the downstairs of the house was flooded. This has caused heavier surface wear to the bottom edge, some waving and (very light) 'stick' marks inside the gatefold. Otherwise, I can't see any ring wear or other defects. Hence low start price.

All round, a beautiful and much loved first pressing of a real rarity.
