Background -
The early Turquoise/Silver label Columbia SAX stereo series of LPs are some of the rarest and most valuable records on the planet. As such, they are truly “Holy Grail” items for serious classical music collectors. This is one such example, made in the UK, issued in stereo from 1961 in excellent collectors grade condition throughout - jacket and vinyl are excellent overall!Performance: 8/10

Comments: Back in March I wrote a post on Ferenc Fricsay's DG recording of Opera Ballets, writing that I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of that LP both with respect to performance and sound, and I made reference to this recording. Like the Fricsay, this is a fun program with lively music -- what's not to like about ballet music from the opera? Particular highlights on this LP are the excerpts from Verdi's Aida, Borodin's Prince Igor (including the famous Polovtsian Dances), and Ponchielli's Dance of the Hours from La Gioconda. I regret to say that aside from a few selections of his works (e.g. the Prelude from Die Meistersinger, the Ride of the Valkyries from The Flying Dutchman), I'm just not a big fan of Wagner. Karajan's interpretations of all of these works stack up nicely against Fricsay's, though I might still give Fricsay the upper hand here. Soundwise, this album is not what I would call demonstration quality but nevertheless has some very nice things going for it. Exciting music like that on this program needs strong dynamics, and this recording has a good amount of this. I would have liked more bass impact in works such as the Polovtsian Dances, but overall I cannot complain. The relatively quiet surfaces enable one to pick up plenty of detail during quieter passages, and louder passages are clear and free of distortion. I also enjoyed a wide, deep soundstage, nice hall acoustic (recorded in Kingsway Hall), and a dash of that tube-like warmth. - milestomozart

CONDITION Details:
The LP JACKET is in near mint minus overall condition! The jacket has NO seam splits. The corners and seams are solid with just some light shelf wear. The jacket has flipped over or "clam shell" seams at the top and bottom and the front of the jacket is covered in clear plastic, otherwise known as "CLARI-FOIL". The colors on the jacket are sharp and clean!
The LP is in excellent overall condition. Appearance wise, not a perfect record as we found that the vinyl had a number of light spider marks, some of which may sound on some audio systems, depending on the sensitivity of the gear. When play tested, it performed very well for a vintage record, with no skips, and some light noise periodically, especially during quieter passages of the music. The LP retains much of the original gloss and sheen. It does have a bit of dust and perhaps a finger print or two on the vinyl so it should be cleaned before playing for best results. There are NO serious spindle marks on the record labels.A Short Note About LP GRADING -
- Mint = Only used for sealed items.
- Near Mint = Virtually flawless in every way.
- Near Mint Minus = Item has some minor imperfections, some audible.
- Excellent = Item obviously played and enjoyed with some noise.
- Very Good Plus = Many more imperfections which are noticeable and obtrusive.
For best results, always properly clean your LPs before playing them.
The LP is an audiophile quality pressing (any collector of fine MFSL, half speeds, direct to discs, Japanese/UK pressings etc., can attest to the difference a quality pressing can make to an audio system).
