Label/Format: Liberty – first press blue format, this was only briefly available before the new black design. These have matt, gently textured surfaces.

Label Conditions: Both look amazing! Very clean, fresh and attractive with deep unaged colour. Only two or three fine spindle marks on side with none seen on one. This superb record plays beautifully throughout with a gorgeous cover.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Scarcer on the original blue label, most seen on the black repress. Even harder in this superb condition, the record is fantastic as is the sound which was a thrill to play-grade. The wear-prone flimsy cover is incredibly challenging to find without major wear, creasing, rubbing and ring wear. Often torn, pulled by stickers and tatty. Just look at the beauty of the front and back. Such copies are becoming quite rare. First issues were pressed by Phonogram, the repressing was by EMI.

Brief Info: Third album by the kings of ‘swamp rock’, and another beauty with their sound now very much established. Featuring one of the most distinctive vocalists in rock, John Fogerty, this band went from strength-to-strength. What a pleasure to hear this vintage copy with such beautiful sound. Nothing betters a first blue label copy of this classic, beautifully pressed by Phonogram with a gorgeous cover. A wonderful album that includes the classic ‘Bad Moon Rising’ and the title song, plus two other singles issued in the United States. This one of the finest copies I have seen or heard.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): in real terms this looks way better, the front and back on their own are nearer Mint(–). A single unlaminated format made with soft, flimsy matt textured card. Printed in England, includes the original 1969 date-coded polylined inner sleeve.

Cover Front & Back: The term ‘wear-prone’ hardly covers this one – this is very delicate and flimsy, totally uncompromising and few will survive with the front and back looking cleaner, fresher, deeply coloured and attractive than this. Any hint of rubbing only on the very edges, and just one small, fine corner tip crease apart, has survived without any. Just look at the beauty of the graphics, almost unblemished without the usual ring wear and grubbiness. The detail on the texturing is sublime, I have tried to show it in the close-up pictures. A real gem and rarely seen as such.

Top & Bottom Edges: All edges on this are incredibly thin, so some rubbing is beyond difficult to avoid. There is very little on the top edge and all remain straight. Predictably, there is some light to moderate rubbing on the bottom storage one.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, generally sharp with minimal wear or curl. Viewing end-on simply emphasises just how thin the card is – and it really is thin. Record enters on this fragile edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Still solid, straight with any compression light, a hint of patchy feathering on the top fold. Most of these will be threadbare these days, so to have the majority of the text intact and still readable is something of a triumph. Slight clipping to the central lettering with around half of ‘Liberty’ eroded at the very bottom, but given the format and fragility, this spine has fared quite well.

Corners: Mostly light tip rubs and a small tip crease on the bottom left, again put in context for card like this, they have again fared generally well.

Cover Summary: With most of any wear on the bottom storage edge and the odd small tip rub or two, this near jaw-drop gorgeous cover will prove immensely difficult to find much better with a blue-label first pressed record inside. But business areas of the front and back are beautiful and should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a Polydor style polylined inner that is date-coded /119 (November 1969). A fine press line each side, but hardly any creasing, the paper only gently darkened with aged. A clear, hardly crinkled lining is seen through two pristine window circles and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better. A superb visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed on high quality vinyl. A copy appearing little played on all the evidence with any surface blemishes very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. One fine line on the run out groove area does nothing. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers bar the aforementioned run out blemish. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this ultimate first pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
