Description
Datura were a New Zealand power trio who released just two albums - "Allisone" in 1998, and "Visions For The Celestial" in 1999 - on CD only. Both are masterpieces. But let's talk about "Visions.." - it's an absolutely MONSTER heavy psych album that you'd swear was recorded back in about 1972/73. Think about how good Human Instinct's "Stoned Guitar" album is...10-out-of-10, right?
THIS album...is THAT good. Maybe better. And that's both near impossible and fighting talk, I know.
This is early 70's heavy progressive and the heavier side of krautrock and a tinge of late 60's U.S. psychedelia, all wrapped into one. Nothing is out of place - the drums and bass are heavy and right on the money in a Geezer-and Bill/first album-Sabbath kind of way, the vocals are powerful and utterly perfect...and that just leaves the guitar-playing. I shake my head in disbelief at how incredible it is...as a prog fan for 40 years now, I oughta know someone else as good as this...but I don't. Brent Middlemiss takes all the best parts of the styles of Hendrix, Billy TK, Tony Iommi, Manuel Gottsching, Gary Ramon - at their peaks! - and shreds it all over this album. The guitar playing is relentless...and whether trippy, psyched-out, spaced-out, riff-heavy...whatever...it's laden with melody at every turn. In fact, try marrying "Stoned Guitar" and Sabbath's "Paranoid" and you might be close.
If you inhabit the world of prog, psych, and stoner, and you somehow don't know this, you're in for the treat of your life.
This was a later German limited edition of only 500 on vinyl - the first 100 were on red vinyl (and long out of print), then 400 on black vinyl. This is one of those super-rare red vinyl copies.
After this, they evolved into Arc Of Ascent...and that's another place you'll need to visit.

Here's a couple of reviews that get into where the band's coming from:
1. "On "Euphoria" things get a little more interesting and we really start to trip out. I liked the brain-searing acid metal guitar and the mix has it shooting between left and right such that it jarred my head a bit. Actually it sounds like dual guitars on this track and the whole thing is head banging and mind melting at the same time. But the closing track, the 15-minute "Mantra", is completely different. Keyboards create a mucho spacey landscape over which the guitar plays still slow paced, but less heavy stoner wah'd, and more trippy solos than on the rest of the album. Same for the bass. It aids the drums as a rhythm instrument, leaving the stoner throb behind so the keyboards and guitar can do their cosmic magic. There's just a wee bit of the stoner element from the guitar but it adds a welcome edge to the music and contrasts nicely with the flowing space keyboards. This is a solid piece of tripped out psychedelic space rock and really took me by surprise."
2. "This has got to be the most perfect, incredible piece of psychedelic/stoner rock I have ever heard, and I do mean ROCK! From the opening track 'Magnetise' to the 10 minute plus beautiful epic 'Mantra' this is a very diverse and ear catching piece of work. I couldn't begin to rave enough about all the fine points of this album. 'Sunshine In Purple' is probably my favorite track on here, injecting a semi slow vibe, never as slow as say Sleep or Electric Wizard, but the singer injects some amazing feeling into this punishing masterpiece, and when I say punishing I mean in a mellow way. Check out 'Reaching Out,' which shows them at a bit of a faster pace and a monster riff section that reminds me of the greatest of Kyuss' rocking tunes like 'Green Machine.' The 10 minute plus epic 'Mantra' is so beautiful you won't mind the length of the track, especially when you hear the flutes and spacey sounds floating through this one. The mellow vibes run throughout 'Voyage' as well, and even though some of the lyrics deal with 60's era peace and love type topics, you can't help but just be blown away by the overall extreme heaviness of it all."
