Deep Purple and their masterwork Deep Purple In Rock truly paved the way for a lot of the hard rock and metal bands of today with the music contained on this legendary release.

Long before reunions became big-money pursuits, the key members of Deep Purple put aside differences that caused them to split in 1973 and, bowing not to financial concerns but public demand, reformed for their first album in 11 years and a subsequent blockbuster tour. While the record’s title cleverly acknowledges the long time the musicians spent apart, everything about the LP confirms the inimitable blend of creative chemistry, crafty songwriting, and trademark skills shared by the five players.

All the hallmark traits from Deep Purple’s golden era (1970-1973) are on display throughout this platinum comeback affair, which has aged much better than most mid-80s efforts in terms of sound, performance, and content. At times mystical, aggressive, and dramatic, Perfect Strangers leaves a lasting impression courtesy of Ian Gillan’s leather-lunged vocal range, Roger Glover’s self-assured bass lines, Ian Paice’s titanium-tough drumming, and the trade-off soloing between the wizard-like, vibrato-emboldened guitar playing of Ritchie Blackmore and voodoo-casting organ spells of Jon Lord.

THE BOOK OF TALIESYN - Most rock n roll fans think of Deep Purple as a premiere hard rock n roll band with some intriguing organ passages which compliment the shrieking vocals of Ian Gillan as well as some elaborate Ritchie Blackmore. However, Deep Purple was not always so hard and heavy from the start. On their first three LPs, Deep Purple's music had a very pronounced psychedelic tone with even some classical touches. This second release, The Book of Taliesyn is certainly high on creativity because of these aforementioned touches.

Especially noteworthy are the covers of Neil Diamond's Kentucky Woman, the Beatles' We Can Work It Out, and River Deep Mountain High. The drumming on these songs as well as the harmony vocals inject a great deal of pulse into these songs The ballad Anthem is a nice diversion from some of the rockin' tunes on the record. Listen, Learn, Read On and Shield add some supernatural mystical tones that are truly captivating. The organ work by Jon Lord is extremely exemplary.
