Deep Purple : Machine Head A1 / B1 inc Lyric Poster
This first pressing plays with stunning audio and there is just no interference on either side. The clarity, depth and power of the audio is sensational and in all my years I have not heard one as impressive as this. 'As new' more than describes the sonic quality on offer here and this is very much FINAL UPGRADE time-warp classic. The vinyl is also visually stunning and the previous owner clearly bought this to add to the collection and not to play it. There are only a couple of spindle traces on each label to back up that theory although the audio more or less confirms it anyway!
The gatefold is in superb Near Mint condition with no obvious wear and the same applies to the original fold out lyric sheet. The original inner is also in great condition. A stunning album in every way.
As this is a genuine first press there is no EMI logo on the labels and has 'The Gramophone Co. Ltd' around the top of the perimeter edge and 'Made In Gt. Britain' at the foot of the label plus the A1U/B1U matrix.

Visual grading
This vinyl is in amazing condition and still has an immaculate jet-black glossy sheen. There are no marks or scratches and I cannot locate any hairlines either! There is no groove wear or 'fading' and in all honesty this looks like it was purchased 'as new' yesterday! The run out grooves are also super clean as are labels which as stated have hardly any spindle wear. A visually stunning record for sure.
Play grading
The iconic intro on the classic 'Highway Star' plays with genuine quality and with no interference at all. Gillan's first vocal is equally as good and it continues in the same precise. So far what strikes me is the power and definition of the audio - there is no groove wear, no 'muddiness' to the sound and each note is so clean and precise. Nowhere is that more obvious than during the mid instrumental section. The audio is so deep and strong and this kind of sonic quality only comes from a record that has been so well preserved and hardly played down the years. Blackmore's solo towards the end is exceptional and the final vocal is also flawless. I am confident in grading this as Mint and 'as new' describes the audio perfectly.
'Maybe I'm A Leo' is of the same 'high end' standard with no ticks, clicks or pops and no underlying static either. It plays as if it was 1972 again! Again the clarity and depth of the audio cannot be faulted and the fade out has no 'background', not one dust tick. Another Mint track.
'Pictures Of Home' begins with a perfect percussive intro and from that point on plays with sublime precision. From start to finish there is no intrusion on the audio and as always I have played the track in its entirety. Why wouldn't I?! The production values are so strong on this album and that quality is all over this track! The vocals are so strong but the instrumental sections are particularly impressive. They have such strength and depth and again the 'as new' tag can be used. The closing instrumental is absolutely STUNNING! This really is audio of the audio of the highest calibre and Mint is again very much deserved. And another perfect fade out by the way...
'Never Before' plays with stunning quality from the very first groove and it does not diminish the further you get into the track. What stands out is the total lack of distortion which is a rarity for this track. The clarity and depth is so impressive and it provides a superb Mint finish to the side. Audio doesn't really get any better than this!
----------------------------------------------------------------------- The iconic intro on 'Smoke On The Water' could not play any better! The opening grooves on any record often play with some 'background' but that is not the case here and I reiterate this is nearly 50 years old! If you're lucky enough to win this just listen to Paice's drumming - so 'high in the mix' and so clear but then applies to every instrument. The first verse and chorus are of the same 'high end' standard and it continues to play with breathtaking quality with not even a solitary dust tick let alone anything more. I cannot emphasise enough just how incredible the audio is here - it is a STUNNING version and Mint is again an easy grade to give.
The long intro on 'Lazy' is awesome! Hate using that word but it's suitable here! A couple of barely audible dust ticks but honestly the sonic quality here is just incredible. There are a number of quiet sections here and yet they all play to the same standard with literally no intrusion. As the tempo increases there is no let up in quality and it continues to play with unbelievable power and depth. The vocal sections are faultless and the remainder does not disappoint. The playback throughout is phenomenal. 'As new' again sums it up and there is no distortion on the top end either. MINT and then some!
The final track 'Space Truckin' plays perfectly from the get go and suffice to say it continues in the same manner. The audio is so strong and dynamic and there just are no negatives. This is a track that demands to be played loud and the good thing is that by doing so you lose none of the original sonic quality as there is just no inner groove distortion. Every second of this classic closing track pays testament to how well this vinyl has been preserved and the final section provides ample evidence of this. Gillan's super charged vocal has never sounded better and this is easily a Mint finish to classic album.
In summary this first pressing plays with a quality that is so rarely found today. It was generally so heavily played due to being so popular that few have remained in this condition. This was obviously purchased by a genuine collector who didn't buy to play and this is borne out by the sonic quality, the stunning visual quality and that there is barely any spindle wear. This is a true FINAL UPGRADE first pressing that delivers on every level. I sold a top quality one of these back in June I think and this is equally as good if not better! There is no interference on either side and has to be the most 'complete' version I have ever heard. This is why we listen to vinyl, you cannot replicate this 'sound' anywhere else. What an album!
The Gatefold, Lyric Poster & Inner Sleeve
The laminated G & L gatefold is in superb condition with barely any shelf wear and has again been so well preserved. The edges and wide spine have no 'rubbing' and the corners have no obvious wear either. The opening edge is pristine with only one minor 'wave' near the top. The front cover is stunning with no laminate damage and all I can see is one tiny laminate 'bubble' in the top left corner. The back cover is just as good and the inside of the gatefold is immaculate. A fantastic example overall, you could not find better in my opinion.
The fold out lyric poster is stunning and has barely any of the creasing that you so often find. This has hardly ever been opened! It has just one very small faint mark but is as near to perfect as is possible. The original plain white die-cut inner is in great shape with no side splits or tears, no marking and no obvious creasing.
