AND THE ORIGINAL HARVEST COMPANY INNER SLEEVE (which is now a bit of a rarity in itself)
One of Deep Purple's four indispensable albums (the others being In Rock, Machine Head, and Burn), 1971's Fireball saw the band broadening out from the no-holds-barred hard rock direction of the previous year's cacophonous In Rock.
Metal machine noises introduced the sizzling title track -- an unusually compact but explosively tight group effort on which Jon Lord's organ truly shined.
The innuendo-encrusted hilarity of "Anyone's Daughter," featuring one of singer Ian Gillan's first (and still best) humorous storylines to go with one of guitarist Ritchie Blackmore's most uncharacteristic, bluesiest performances ever.
"The Mule" opened the vinyl album's second side with what is perhaps Purple's finest instrumental, and on the hyper-extended "Fools," the bandmembers proved they could flirt with progressive rock without plunging off its cliff (although the song could probably have done without its drawn-out middle section). And closing the album was the exceptional "No One Came," where intertwining instrumental lines locked together beautifully, Gillan wove another entertaining yarn that was part autobiography and part Monty Python, and the often underrated skills of drummer Ian Paice helped the song sound so unreservedly fresh and intuitive that one could almost be convinced the band had winged it on the spot.
Sure, the following year's Machine Head would provide Deep Purple with their commercial peak, but on Fireball, the formidable quintet was already firing on all cylinders.
Track Listing:
Side 1: FIREBALL / NO NO NO / DEMON'S EYE / ANYONE'S DAUGHTER
Side 2: THE MULE / FOOLS / NO ONE CAME
LABELS: The labels are clean and bright with no unwanted marks/writing, just a little rubbing around the spindle hole and some light spindle traces - this copy has been played but not overplayed
VINYL Visual: The vinyl still retains its original deep, glossy sheen with just a couple of light scuffs and some light sleeve removal type hairlines - these light marks are of no real consequence - the audio is sensational throughout
VINYL Audio: Outstanding audio quality throughout. This LP is beautifully recorded with an incredibly strong, deep, rich and vibrant sound - full of restless energy and excitement and right from the opening breakneck, ferocious drumming intro of "Fireball" through to the final track "No One Came" the audio delivery is absolutely sensational. On playback at a loud volume (which is how I always listen to my LPs prior to listing and how this brilliant LP needs to be heard) there are no scratches, no sticks or jumps, no loud clicks/pops and barely any surface noise (really hardly any, just a touch between some - not all - of the tracks). The delivery is really sensational throughout and the LP plays to an extremely high standard with all frequencies bright and clear, no groove-wear and no distortion. Critically graded a very strong EXCELLENT+ for audio - this is a great copy
SLEEVE: This sleeve is incredibly difficult to find in decent condition due to its delicate textured finish and the soft card its printed on but this one has held up remarkably well. There is none of the common ring wear to the surfaces, just a little record impression on the back and the edges and spine are sharp with very little storage wear - all text on the spine is clear and bold. Critically graded an EXCELLENT but actually one of the finest first press sleeves I have seen recently
INSERT: The lyric insert is in practically untouched NEAR MINT condition. It is good and square and clean with crisp, sharp, uncreased edges and no later amendments to the lyrics (which are incorrect in places)
The original Harvest inner bag is also NEAR MINT with no splits to any of the edges - clean and fresh
