SUPERB UK FIRST PRESSING OF A SENSATIONAL LP -ONE OF THE CLEANEST SOUNDING COPIES I HAVE HEARD - PRETTY HARD TO BEAT AND VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Recorded over three nights in August 1972, Deep Purple's Made in Japan was the record that brought the band to head-liner status in the U.S. and elsewhere, and it remains a landmark in the history of heavy metal music.
Since reorganising with singer Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover in 1969, Deep Purple had recorded three important albums — Deep Purple in Rock, Fireball, and Machine Head — and used the material to build a fierce live show.
Made in Japan, its selections drawn from those albums, documented that show, in which songs were drawn out to ten and even nearly 20 minutes with no less intensity, as guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and organist Jon Lord soloed extensively and Gillan sang in a screech that became the envy of all metal bands to follow.
The signature song, of course, was "Smoke on the Water," with its memorable riff, but those extended workouts, particularly the moody "Child in Time," with Gillan's haunting falsetto wail and Blackmore's amazingly fast playing, and "Space Truckin'," with Lord's organ effects, maintained the onslaught, making this a definitive treatment of the band's catalogue and its most impressive album.
Track Listing:
Side 1: HIGHWAY STAR (Osaka - 16th August 1972) / CHILD IN TIME (Osaka - 16th August 1972)
Side 2: SMOKE ON THE WATER (Osaka - 15th August 1972) / THE MULE (Tokyo - 17th August 1972)
Side 3: STRANGE KIND OF WOMAN (Osaka - 16th August 1972) LAZY (Tokyo - 17th August 1972)
Side 4: SPACE TRUCKIN' (Osaka - 16th August 1972)
LABELS: The labels are clean and bright with no unwanted marks/writing and only light/moderate spindles (randomly spaced and probably a dozen or so). There are some foxing spots (please see photos) on the labels, very common on this first pressing, undoubtedly due to the adhesive formula the pressing plant were using at the time but on this copy there is only one/two per side (and I have seen some labels which are covered in them)
VINYL Visual: All four surfaces are practically unmarked and shine like new with only a couple of the faintest hairlines visible under a bright light - these have no audio consequence - 2 beautiful records
VINYL Audio: The audio is absolutely sensational - crystal clear, tremendously powerful sound and on playback at a loud volume there are no scratches, no sticks, no jumps, no loud clicks/pops and no surface noise - not even on the quietest passages (intros and solos) which play just about as quietly as vinyl possibly can (which in my experience is extremely rare for this LP). This is a beautifully clean pressing which plays to the highest possible standard with no groove-wear and no distortion and is critically graded a strong MINT- for audio - just about the finest I have heard - fantastic copy, stunning LP
SLEEVE: The gatefold sleeve is in EXCELLENT+ condition. The outer laminated surfaces have a beautiful deep gloss with very little rubbing and only light record impression and the unlaminated inside is clean, bright and fresh. The spine is sharp and crisp and displays all text clear and bold. A beautifully preserved example of this easily worn sleeve
