Label/Format: Harvest – with matt, smooth surfaces. This ‘first pressed’ format copy has no EMI logo and includes the ‘GRAMOPHONE CO LTD’ text on the rims. Later pressings included the small boxed EMI logo and the text was changed to EMI Co Ltd.

Label Conditions: Both clean, fresh and attractive with spindle marks light+, a little long, but very fine and faint as seen under angled light. And be assured, this record is superb and plays beautifully throughout. A very quiet pressing and including a super shiny cover and fine Harvest inner sleeve. Find this a great deal better will prove difficult.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Arguably Deep Purple’s finest and most treasured album, their fourth and the one that really won them ‘mass’ appeal after a patchy start with the band performing cover versions and really going nowhere very fast in commercial terms. A new vocalist was introduced – Ian Gillan – and now performing their own material, a new ‘supergroup’ was born. An album of hard-edged riffs and vocals of the highest calibre – few singers could even live with the power behind him – but this new formula worked perfectly. ‘In Rock’ quickly became one of the heavy rock classics of all-time and this contains several of the band’s finest anthems including the awesome ‘Child in Time’ and ‘Speed King’. My favourite song here however is the lesser mentioned final song, ‘Hard Lovin’ Man’ that simply drives and flows from the speakers with channel-to-channel pyrotechnics – with speed – a hugely impressive track. Special mention here to for Lord’s superb keyboards, his untimely death would have saddened many rock fans. Keyboard players within heavy bands often do not get the praise they should – this man was VERY special and helped give Deep Purple their almost unique sound. This album sold well, and peaking at 4 in the UK (but only a poorly 143 in the US) it has to be one of the very best issued on this famous progressive label. A very fine all-round example – lovely clean shiny cover and a record that plays beautifully with clean distortion-free sound and little unwanted at all.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a gatefold format, laminated front and back, the inside matt finished and smooth. On this one, the laminate ends inside on the bottom edges – some omit this detail and are tucked inside. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. Included is the Harvest promotional inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front & Back: The laminate retains a superb shine, freshness and clarity. Just a trace of dulling around the rim on the back only seen under light, and just one very small lift near the back top left corner tip. Any creasing is very fine, little and light – a few super-fine edge types and fine, quite gentle traces near the front top right corner. Hardly even a half moon type to be seen – maybe a semi-one on the back, but barely anything spoils the classic artwork. Both sides are totally age-defying in their shine and total freshness, the surfaces almost gleam like ice on a sunny day. The open end sides both have quite wide lamiante end lines, the exposed strips are both immaculate and totally unworn or grubby. One to hold and admire really, with so many of these looking dull and aged, this beauty the total opposite.

Cover Inside: The inside is close to as-made and again looks fantastic. The laminate ends on the bottom edges free of grime and discolouration that blight so many.

Top & Bottom Edges: All four retain full laminate and are still ultra smooth and scuff-free. Mainly straight, the bottom pair especially so, they also meet up together flush and parallel.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both very clean and sharp with again barely any hint of wear or thickening. Record enters on the back edge, all are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced. A little natural curl to the top corner areas being critical. Thin card gatefolds will seldom be totally flat after all these years, but this is pretty close.

Spine and Text: With the raised type of inner hinge, this spine will in most cases form a natural central recess and the text will sink a little. Exactly that here, but that apart, this one is superb being practically unworn. Solid, straight with ALL of the laminate retained with no peeling, flaking or cracking – this very unusual of this type of spine. These, in most cases do compress a little, and most shed all their laminate freely, but as stated this is FULLY intact and ultra smooth from end-to-end and totally scuff-free. The text totally unworn and solid, yes a little sunken in the natural ‘crease’, but few avoid it. Some ‘In Rock’ covers had square spines which do keep their shape better. This being the more ‘rounded’ type, as per the standard issue ‘Sgt Pepper’ spines (which most will know wear badly as well). Even the fold hinges here are silky smooth as well.

Corners: Any tip rubbing is tiny as is any tip creasing. A tiny peel on the back top left tip near the very small lift, this barely even registers and I only confirmed this blemish under a magnifier. Excellent or better shape retained with no knocks or dinks evident.

Cover Summary: A very impressive example of this very famous rock cover, this does it near maximum justice and will please many, if not most collectors.

The Harvest Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): and only one corner crease stops the extra (+). A little quite light darkening of the seam adhesive, but way less than usual. This one retains the polylining (that never guaranteed) and has all edges unsplit with no repairs. These famous Harvest promotional inners are so often missing or replaced, and this one has hardly aged at all and looks impressive.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a super visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. Any surface traces are ultra fine, few and faint as seen critically under bright angled light – two impressive playing surfaces that will never prove easy to find better. As age-defying as the splendid cover, this should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: An early example that plays above its visual grading with hardly anything to fault. An album that does have some very quiet passages but these play impressively clean and quiet from what is a near exceptional pressing. My Linn LP12 takes no prisoners in revealing all what is good as well as bad on any record – and there is nothing bad about this copy. Few copies will play the ultra quiet passages silent, but this one gives a real good go. Any gentle reminders of what is actually being played, a near 44-year-old record, are faint and very few indeed. Overall, strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. The stereo imagery is fantastic especially on the final track. No tracking issues* or pressing sounds, I consider this a fairly challenging album and few early examples will better this I feel sure. Nothing of any spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this hard rock classic. Strongly recommended, finding all elements on this copy will prove very challenging indeed.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
