" Division 4 rose from the ashes of Sydney punk band “The Bland” who ...played a total of 3 shows.

1 in 1979 & 2 in early 1980 at the now sadly demolished Sussex hotel, supporting an unknown 3 piece mod band called The Sets. “The Bland” consisted of brothers Brad & Kieren Fitzpatrick on guitars, Brett Rotten (real name Croxon) on lead vocals, Alan Hislop on drums & Trevor Conomy on Bass.

This was the dying days of punk & the Fitzpatrick brothers with an eye on the future & looking for the next ‘new wave’ trend, could see the emerging mod revival in the UK was producing some of the most exciting & energetic bands of the that time. Groups like “The Jam”, “The Chords” & “Secret Affair” were making exciting contemporary music directly influenced by 60’s greats like “The Who” & “The Small Faces”. Also huge influences at the time were “The Inmates” playing a souped up style of R&B that would prove extremely influential to the fledgling “Division 4”.

After the demise of “The Bland”, Kieren placed an ad on the notice board at UNSW for musicians influenced by the above mentioned bands. Joe Genua, drummer extraordinaire answered the call & bought with him his mate Anthony Howell Smith the 3rd to play bass. A band was born.

After some months rehearsal learning a diverse set of covers ranging from the poppier side of the punk bands (Buzzcocks) to songs by “The Who” “Small Faces” “Yardbirds” & more obscure tracks from the 60’s punk compilations that were beginning to emerge (Nuggets & Pebbles) the boys were ready to hit the road. In late 1980 when we started playing our first shows, the Sydney mod scene had grown somewhat. By now there was a large scene revolving around the Sussex Hotel which supported a number of bands who were either mod or directly influenced by the movement. Some names that come to mind are “The Sets”, “Fast Cars”, “The Introverts”, & “Jump Vision”. This lot would soon be joined by others & the scene continued to grow.

“Division 4” played as many gigs as we could handle. We played a lot. All the time it seemed which was both a blessing & a curse. A blessing because we got tighter & started to improve slowly as musicians. A curse because we were playing so much that our bass player Anthony decided he wanted a social life & decided to leave. What could have been a disaster turned to fortune as we ended up quickly filling the bass spot with the talented Ian Schofield. During the time Ian was with us we played ever more gigs to larger audiences outside the city venues supporting such names as “The Allnighters”, “Spy vs Spy” & “The Sunnyboys” in venues that carried many hundreds of people like Selinas at Coogee Bay. It was also at this time that we recorded an EP (extended play for those too young to know) titled “On the Beat”& put it out independently in 1982. The title being a sly pun on our band name origins (Division 4 was a popular 1970’s Australian cop show).

It was just after the recording of the EP but before its release that Ian decided to leave the band. He was the youngest member having joined straight out of High School & wanted to further his education. After extensive auditions Mark Jago (formerly of “Stig Can’t Clap”) joined on bass & we enjoyed some of our best gigs supporting the likes of “The Hoodoo Guru’s, The Scientists” & “The Trogs”. During this time we were adding more & more original material to the set & beginning to experiment with other styles of music beyond our original mod/punk influences. We were now adding psychedelic & soul influences to our sound.

Just as things were going well for us Mark decided to leave to pursue his love of filmmaking overseas. Yes it seems as if we were continually losing bass players in some Spinal Tap style curse!

After a recommendation from a friend we took on John Salway late of “the Clones” (a very popular Sydney band in the late 70’s) as our final bass player. By now we were playing 100% originals & veering towards a power pop sound through Johns influence on the song writing. Unfortunately this was not what our audience wanted to hear & we started playing to fewer people. The times were changing as 80’s music in the “new Romantic” style was becoming popular. Band’s like “Spandau Ballet” “ABC” & “Culture Club” were dominating the charts with music that featured keyboard over guitars & suddenly we found ourselves very much out of favor.

The end came one Saturday night late in 1984 when we said goodbye to our friends & followers at the Mosman Hotel on a bill that also had “The Introverts” playing their final show. "  .......  BRAD FITZPATRICK, DIVISION 4 FACEBOOK PAGE
