IMPORTANT NOTE: I haven't had a turntable since last century, so this sale needs to be considered "as is," but I will describe everything the best I can. This album was rarely played, and I would be shocked if it has been on a turntable more than a few times. I'm not a "record seller," and I don't know "grading," so you'll have to deal with my descriptions. If you're not happy after the sale, just contact me. Are You There (Vinyl, 1996) Ovum Recordings CAS 8663 Perhaps The Strangest Excuse For A Vinyl Record I've Ever Seen.
DJ Josh Wink is known around the world. He's plastered across social media and he's the founder of Ovum Recordings and has had cult hits like 1994's "Liquid Summer." His label head status is surely how this 12" vinyl even came to exist. Because no corporate record label in their right minds would ever finance a promo record like this...
This is a blank, info-free, one-sided, 12" vinyl record with no music, containing only a single locked groove on one of the sides (see pic) that repeatedly plays over and over again. Presumably for seconds (or less than a minute). I say presumably, because I haven't listened to this since I first received it in 1996, and I just don't remember what happens when it plays. In fact, when I found it on my shelves last year, it took me months to even figure out what it was, since the jacket is generic, and the vinyl has ZERO information about the artist, contents or intent. In fact, the ONLY information is on one of the labels... so small it requires a magnifying glass to read. A cataloging number, "CAS 8663 XSS 8662 a." A variation of that number is also found etched where an inner groove usually is - along with a complete 212 telephone number. The other side is completely blank, zero grooves, and with a blank black label. THAT'S IT. When researching a record, that's just not a whole lot to go on.
I finally found the (scant few) details about this release at Discogs, which tells us that it is, indeed, DJ Josh Wink (aka "Wink," aka Joshua Winkelman). Discogs also confirms that this was a PROMO-ONLY release (to promote an "Electronic - Breaks, Techno, Acid" release entitled "Are You There"). My guess is that THIS vinyl's few grooves contain one of the samples/dialog snippets or sounds from the official, commercially available track. In short, an expensive and not very sensible promotional tool for the real thing. Well... Wink's madness is your gain - if you're a collector of such things. I can't really explain why I hung onto it for 25 years, but my hoarding issues are your gain, too.
What I CAN tell you is that the vinyl is virtually mint. The generic black sleeve has handling wear and a bend (you can almost see it in the upper right - depending on which side you call the front), curiously it's only on one side. The other side doesn't have the bend. Over all the cover is not bad at all. The good news is that it's EASILY replaced with any generic black sleeve you happen to have. So you can turn this into a MINT/MINT oddity in no time. There you have it. That's what I know. I've never seen another one for sale, and I've never read a word about this particular promo (except at Discogs). For DJ Wink collectors, you've finally found one... that's IF you knew it even existed.
