FROM THE DEPRESSION YEAR OF 1933, comes this record - Columbia's bid to capitalize on the new Russ Columbo - Walter Winchell movie, "BROADWAY THRU A KEYHOLE." This picture is loaded with great tunes. Here are two of them, by VERY different ensembles:
"YOU'RE MY PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE" by BEN SELVIN AND HIS ORCHESTRA. Actually, ENRIQUE MADRIGUERA'S ORCHESTRA, this is a lush arrangement by a big studio orchestra with strings, a romantic interpretation.
"DOIN' THE UPTOWN LOWDOWN" by JOE VENUTI AND HIS BLUE SIX. Red-hot jazz at its best! Stylistically, a holdover from the late '20s - by 1933, it's one of the last lingering looks at this type of music. JOE VENUTI (violin) leads the ensemble, with BENNY GOODMAN (clarinet), BUD FREEMAN (tenor sax), ADRIAN ROLLINI (bass sax), JOE SULLIVAN (piano), DICK MCDONOUGH (guitar), NEIL MARSHALL (drums). The side is so hot that for years I never noticed there weren't any brass instruments involved!
This original 1933 "Royal Blue" Columbia 2834-D is a little beat, especially on "Past," with a few nasty groove rips. The Venuti side is in better shape, with the groove intact. Strictly speaking, this record is V+ (Selvin); E- (Venuti).
