In 1970, Elektra Records released a Doors hits collection called 13. In 1971, the Doors scored two more hits, "Love Her Madly" and "Riders on the Storm," and their lead singer, Jim Morrison, died. In 1972, Elektra released a two-LP anthology containing "Love Her Madly" and "Riders on the Storm," along with a lot of album tracks. But there was no single-LP compilation that contained all the Doors' hits, from "Light My Fire" to "Riders on the Storm." This 11-track 1973 album was an attempt to address that problem, and at the time of its release, containing seven of the Doors' eight Top 40 hits (the exception being "The Unknown Soldier"), it was the best Doors greatest-hits collection on the market. In 1985, Elektra assembled a new, two-LP album also called The Best of the Doors (Elektra 60345), which contained the seven hits from the earlier album plus 11 other tracks. In 1991, the later album was reissued as a two-CD set with a bonus track added. The initial Best Of (5035) is out of print.

You have not lived unless/until you've heard the Great Doors Hits in QUAD. Nothing beats the multi-layered lost-in-the-storm feel of 'Riders on the Storm" swirling all around you, or carnivals-of-your-mind vortex of sound of that extended guitar/organ solo in "Light my Fire". Plus, the only snippet of Doors performing live, and in multichannel, surround-sound glory, no less, can be found here (on 'Who do you love'). This is your last chance to hear Jim Morrison perform in person (Well, almost, kinda-sorta, “virtually” live). Quadraphonic recordings of the early 70's died a slow and agonizing death because of their hopeless incompatibility with the existing stereo and mono equipment (they can be played on stereo equipment, but not to the full effect), but they live on in the hearts of the collectors, and for good reason: some of the finest audiophile recordings ever made - whether rock, soul or classical, were released on some of these, little known and poorly advertised, albums. And, what a gorgeous presentation these recordings are: with rich audio-textures and stunning multi-channel separation which is truly a jaw-dropping, head-spinning experience.

This is a rare opportunity to acquire this great album in its FINEST audio format, no longer in print, and no longer easily obtainable. Still sealed original quad pressing?!? Good luck finding one…

(c)             Quad pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its stereo counterpart. The mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and in some instances (we cannot guarantee) the mixes may be somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber quad by a ratio of at least 20:1.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
