Label/Format: Philips – original intense black, matt finished with textured surfaces (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both in superb condition: very clean, fresh and attractive with only very light, few and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. An amazing record by anyone’s standards given this dates back to 1964 and in mono.

Cat Number: BL 7594.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 135 grams. Given it’s era, around average weight.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Scarce: even more so when found little played and so clean and offering pristine sound. As I often state, most collectors will know just what the majority of mono records this great age will look and sound like these days. The very discerning owner of this one barely played it and the difference is seen and heard immediately.

Brief Info: The debut album by one of the UK’s greatest ever female vocalists. Issued in the UK in 1964 after leaving The Springfields, this powerful, soulful album is a gem and includes some wonderful songs by quality writers of the day. This national treasure can be heard to absolute maximum pleasure from this stunningly preserved mono record, the format of the era. Very difficult to find like this, the wonderful vocals are often ruined by heavy tracking equipment of the day or was simply played many times. Highly unusual to find the popular albums clearly so little used or even handled, I have certainly never seen this record in such lovely visual or sounding condition. From beginning to end, all is focused, sharp, noise-free and devoid of pops or clicks. It will almost remind of a new record and was a sheer delight, this played on a highly revealing system too, for which this record was never really designed. For fans of this wonderful lady, this must not be missed.

Cover Grade and Format: Excellent or very close to. A single format with front laminate. This wraps around all the closed edges on to three large rear external flipbacks. Printed and made in England.

Lamination & Front: The front is really lovely with blemishes few and light. A little light burring and tiny chipping on the right opening edge, this on the extreme edges only. One tiny scuff and two fine hairlines near the bottom left edge and that’s about it really. Minor surface blemishes that few covers of this age will fail to attract. The laminate is very solid and clear with a lovely shine and freshness. Even under light barely any traces of friction rubs or dulling and all is fully adhered with any creases tiny, very few and light. The lovely artwork will be hard to find much better on an original mono cover.

Cover Back: The back has hardly any real wear, just the main unprotected back panel has some mildish darkening with some fairly light toning on the actual edges inside the flipbacks. A back with a more ‘matured’ look that many appreciate as correct for any cover this age. One small burr on the left opening edge and barely any creasing or rubbing at all. The flipbacks are very neat indeed and remain very clean and solid. The top right corner had creased and lifted, but was no problem to re-adhering of course. All are very white with no grime-lines to their ends and even the ends lack burring or scuffs. So a fine back to match the excellent front.

Top Edge: No real wear.

Bottom Edge: The odd tiny surface chip or two only.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear and no feathering or trimming. A little mild burring and slight chipping seen on the extreme edge via the front. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Little short of as-made: solid, straight, uncompressed and square. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked or peeled laminate.

Corners: Any tip rubs are tiny and minor and all retain fine to very fine shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this lovely 1960’s mono cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: The original inner is included. A plain polylined inner that has aged toned quite a lot. I prefer to keep the original inners with records rather than swapping, okay it’s aged, but at around 45 year old, I think it’s earned the right too. Both the windows are immaculate and the lining solid and very clear and all edges secure. Some moderate creasing on one corner and far less on the others.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Critically graded EX++ and very tempted to put my maximum grading of Mint(-) on this one. I have rarely seen many cleaner and less marked mono records of this considerable age. A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface blemishes few and very faint with no sound whatsoever. If only all vintage monos could be found like this. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This outstanding mono record plays even above it’s high visual grading with nothing to fault. I do realise what a bold statement this is, this too on a challenging record with an iconic voice and strong recording. All the ingredients for distortion and clipping, but none here. This has strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Incredibly hard to find these popular records so little used and not abused. Few copies will even match, let alone outperform this very early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly carefully handled and never subjected to a worn stylus. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. Even the innermost songs track and sound sharp, here where the tracking angle is at it’s most critical, so many, even well looked after copies, can be let down here, not this one. And how many will offer no pops and clicks?, remember just one jolt or arm-drop on a Dansette, a vintage mono record player so popular at this time – and there’s another furrow or crater inflicted and another classic written-off. These machines tracked with massive downforce – hence so many monos are worn out or severely marked. This record will prove nigh-on impossible to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. A record for the 60s connoisseur who demands audiophile sound quality in mono.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
