Description

Sermons by Southern Baptist minister George W. Truett

36 Sermons on 18 LPs
Recorded in the pulpit at the peak of Dr. Truett's career

Word Records, Waco, Texas

These 18 records comprise the majority of a 26-album set produced by Word Records of the sermons of Dr. George Truett, each record featuring two sermons. I have noted below the albums included in this group and their sermon titles, and then at the end I have also provided a list of the 8 albums and sermon titles that are lacking from this set.

Condition of records: Overall condition of the records is excellent. All appear rather glossy and seem to have had little use, with some very light scuffing to some of the records. They appear to have been properly stored, vertically, with no cupping. Rub marks around the spindle holes indicate that most have been played at least a time or two. All of these, when I acquired them, still had the paper sleeves inserted sideways, so the records overall have not been exposed to much dust. (I have re-oriented the paper sleeves so that the records are easier to take out - primairly to check that each jacket had the correct record in it - which they all do.)

Condition of jackets: Overall condition of jackets is good only, a few fair only, with some rubbing wear on each. The edges of all the jackets are somewhat abraded, and the top and spine edges are darkened and more abraded. It looks like these probably were on a shelf with some exposure to sunlight on the tops and spines for a long time, which has resulted in browning and some flaking to these edges. Top and bottom seams all seem to be holding pretty well, but about 5 of them have substantial splits to the spine seam (more than half), one spine being completely split to where the record can come right out the opposite side. Two have the spine seam reinforced with a strip of neatly applied packing tape. On the upper left corner of each, someone has neatly written the duration (in minutes) of each side.

From the back cover of each album in the set:

The Ministry of Dr. George W. Truett stands today as one of the most profound known to men. Dr. Truett was a master in the pulpit, unsurpassed as a leader and pastor.

Fortunately, during the lifetime of this great man of God, some of the members of his church in Dallas saw to it that many of Dr. Truett's sermons were preserved on recordings made as he spoke from the pulpit. The sermons included in this album are two of these recordings. They provide a remarkable reproduction of the voice and personality of this great preacher. Even today his messages remain very timely ones.

Dr. Truett was born in Clay County, North Carolina, in 1867. He grew up on the farm in a deeply religious home atmosphere, was converted at the age of 19 and soon began a long and colorful career of leadership and service. The very next year he was instrumental in founding the Hiawassee Academy in Northeastern Georgia and became its first principal.

In 1889, George Truett moved to Texas with his parents. While working in the Baptist Church at Whitewright, he was called to the ministry. His first sermon was preached in the First Baptist Church of Sherman. Soon thereafter, while still a student at Grayson Junior College, he was called on by Dr. B. H. Carroll, president of Baylor University, to lead an intensive financial campaign to relieve the school of a heavy indebtedness.

Within two years the brilliant young preacher led his campaign to a successful conclusion. He then entered the school himself, in 1893, as a 26-year-old freshman, completing his degree in 1897. During his days at Baylor, located in Waco, Texas, the young preacher was highly successful as pastor of the East Waco Church.

By this time his fame had already spread, and he was persuaded to accept the pastorate of the First Baptist Church of Dallas, Texas. He began his long and notable ministry at this church of 715 members in September, 1897, remaining until his death in 1944. During these 47 years, the church grew to be the largest in its denomination, a position it still retains.

Dr. Truett rose in stature as a spiritual leader. His name became nationally known, and he was one of the 20 American preachers selected by President Woodrow Wilson to preach to servicemen overseas during World War I.

On three occasions Dr. George W. Truett was elected unanimously, to the Presidency of the Southern Baptist Convention. His dramatic life of Christian service was climaxed in 1934 when he was chosen President of the Baptist World Alliance.

Dr. Truett's was a memorable life, and his name goes down in history as one of the greatest preachers of all time. A biography of his life, by P. W. James, has been published by The McMillan Company and many of his sermons are available in book form.

Word Records is indeed proud to make available to the public this cherished memory of a great preacher — his own voice as he spoke to his own people!
