Description
This is a re-issue of BOWPROMO1 on 180g coloured vinyl in a strictly limited edition of 300, of which this is number 137.
The vinyl is half blue, half white (see photo)
It features rare versions of some of the tracks from David Bowie's 'Hunky Dory' (rare mixes, rare vocal takes different to the final 'Hunky Dory' versions.).
Background:
In August 1971 , David Bowie's manager Tony Defries was busy putting the finishing touches to promotional work for another Mainman artist, Dana Gillespie. Plucked from an early career of teen folk-pop and stage work, Dana had jumped from her first record label Pye to work on her own glam rock based album.
Setting about pressing 500 promotional LPs to be shipped around the music press and ratio stations, the intention was to highlight selected songs that would eventually be featured on Dana's forthcoming Bowie/Mick Ronson-produced album, along with selected tracks from David's own "Hunky Dory" album, the precursor to "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders from Mars".
The promo, which would become known as "BOWPROMO1" after the etchings on its runout grooves, was distributed with a rather more minimal cover than the one that would adorn the Hunky Dory LP (a mottled, faded and aged picture of an effeminate Bowie) or Dana's album (a decidedly more erotic affair, shrouded by smoke and featuring Dana in a state of near undress).
There were two tracks on the promo that remained unreleased for the next twenty years (Bowie's 'Bombers' wouldn't appear until the Rykodisk/EMI reissues of the early 1990s, while Dana's 'Lavender Hill' wouldn't see release before its inclusion on the Gillespie's rarities LP 'Andy Warhol'.)
Of the Bowie tracks featured, the Hunky Dory tracks are rough mix versions (different mix to the final Hunky Dory versions) and COMPLETELY DIFFERENT VOCAL TAKES in some cases (is especially apparent on 'Eight Line Poem'.)
A must for any serious Bowie collector.
