Decca SXL 2064/5 WBGv Ed1 Smetana ‘Ma Vlast’ Kubelik VPO

This is one of a number of vinyl records from the 1950’s & 60’s listed this week which we no longer listen to. Little played, the records are still in very good condition, the covers sometimes less so.

Gradings are based on the “Record Collector Magazine's Guide” set out in the eBay Guides together with notes about condition added. Extracts from the Gramophone Magazine review written at the time of the record’s release are included, with the permission of the publishers, where these are available.

RECORD GRADINGS (All 4 sides)

EXCELLENT

All four sides in this two record set are in excellent condition. I suspect they have hardly ever been played, maybe just side 1. All four sides are clean and bright and there are no spindle marks on the labels. The sound quality throughout is superb which is perhaps a reflection of the very early ‘Stampers’ on all four sides.

SXL 2064 (Sides 1 & 4) –

Side 1:  (ZAL4077-2K Stampers: 1 & U)

The surface of side 1 is clean and bright. There are some light sleeve rubbings and very few light hairlines. A beautifully clean sounding record with almost no surface sound at all. There is one place on side 1, at about 5 minutes, where I heard a soft tick repeat a few times and, close to the end of the side, there is a run of about 6 clicks.

Side 4:  (ZAL4080-2K Stampers: 1 & A)

There are almost no marks on the surface of this side which, like side 1, plays excellently with minimal surface sound and only a very occasional light tick. I heard almost no unwanted sounds anywhere on this side

SXL 2064 (Sides 2 & 3)

Side 2:  (ZAL4078-2K Stampers: 1 & B)

There are no marks on the surface and the complete side plays with almost no discernible surface noise. I heard almost no unwanted sounds throughout, just a very feint and occasional tick. 

Side 3:  (ZAL4079-3K Stampers: 1 & U)

There are a couple of ‘pressing’ sounds in the run-in and the first couple of revolutions and there is a shade of dust type surface sound just discernible in this very quiet opening to the side. Thereafter I again heard no unwanted sounds.

COVER GRADING

SXL 6064 VERY GOOD

There is a little soiling of both opening edges where the laminate was not applied right to the edge of the card and the binding strip at the bottom of the back has been re-glued at some stage – not as well as it should have been! Otherwise, the cover is almost excellent, clean, undamaged and only a little creased and lightly scuffed at the corners. The blue FFSS inner sleeve is clean, unmarked and undamaged with just a shade of age discolouration

On the front of both covers, towards the top right corner, alongside the line of the record ring, there is a small area where the laminate has an air bubble in it.

SXL 6065 VERY GOOD almost EXCELLENT

This cover is much the same though, in this case, the bottom binding has been fixed with a short strip of tape. There is a very tiny tear visible top left on the back. The record ring is visible as a crease on the front and has caused a small ‘bubbling’ of the laminate bottom right. The back has a shade of discolouration as has its blue FFSS inner sleeve which, otherwise is excellent
