Description
Artist: Donald Byrd
Title: Byrd’s Eye View
Details: Original pressing on Transition. Does not have the booklet. The labels are still attached to the LP but barely (I have made no attempt to glue them as I want to leave it to the buyer to choose their method of doing so).
Cover: VG Seam wear, but only the top right is split about 2 inches. Sticker stain on back and fading to back.
LP: Overall VG due to surface marks and some thin hairlines — see expanded description below. I did this listening test with a Music Hall turntable with a Goldring cartridge at 2grams weight. (This LP has been ultrasonically cleaned)
Side One:
Track One: Plays well with minimal noise. A few intermittent quiet, soft ticks. There is some distortion at a few points in the loudest parts of the trumpet. Without the distortion I would grade VG+
Track two: Minimal noise, and the horn distortion is minimal. There is some light ticking in spots that is unobtrusive.
Side Two
Track One: Thin hairlines cause soft background ticks for most of this track (but not the kind that go “thunk”) that do not disrupt the listening experience significantly. There is distortion in the trumpet.
Track two: Minimal noise, and minimal trumpet distortion (this and track two on side one seem to be recorded with the trumpets perhaps further from the mic). Mobley sounds great. When it’s just Watkins, Silver and Blakey there is minimal noise, including during Watkins’ bass solo.
Track three: Minimal noise through the beginning, Mobley’s solo, and Wilder’s solo. A bit of background then with Silver’s solo but minimal during Watkins’ solo. Byrd (I think) and Mobley then trade off through the end of the song and there is a little background during this.
