It seems unbelievable that some of the best underground music in the world today is here in D.C. The Double-O record is, in one word, overwhelming. It is everything hardcore punk and rock should be. For the uninitiated, Double-O (the interlocking Os symbolize unity) were electrifying in performances, rabid and razor sharp. They were mesmerizing. Luckily, they have a record of their excellence. No longer will their name be a faded mark on somebody's bootleg tape. Since the songs are like a perfect blitz attack, it's difficult to say just what makes this EP so good. Jason Carmer is a guitarist who delivers hellfire. His chords are devastating but steady, controlled lightning. The band is unafraid to experiment. Some chords in "Is It Better" are worthy of a budding Keith Levene. Bassist Bert Queiroz lays down fast foundations and iconoclastic riffs. Drummer Richard Moore keeps up with this madness, a feat in itself. And everyone knows Eric L., lead singer, a charismatic thrasher on stage and an emotional singer (you can hear these lyrics, you don't need an inner sheet). Especially interesting is "Death of a Friend". There's an Eastern tinge to the introduction (could this be the beginning of raga-thrash?). Things speed up and Eric has his best moment on the EP: his voice strained by straight, painful honesty, very much like the young Joe Strummer's (maybe even better). This EP is "dedicated to everyone who supports their own scene". You should definitely support yours.

This is sort of Double O's final epitaph since the band is no longer together. Eric's gone to form E.N.B., Jason's in 9353, and Bert and Richard will probably end up doing something together. As far as local records go this is a good effort, especially in terms of production, energy, and tightness. "Death of a Friend" is pretty unusual with its lush introduction and synthesizer, but sounds more typical when the hard guitar comes in. "You've Lost" is the best song on this EP- it's fast, powerful, and has a good melody. Don't like the heavy metal lead guitar too much, though. Overall, Double O come out sounding a lot better than they ever did live and I'm glad they finally got some of their songs out on vinyl. (Why no lyric sheet, though?)

More excellent DC hardcore, but with a Southern California feel. It's got soaring guitar work, great touches of feedback and bent notes. The production is also up to the high Dischord standard.

An interesting set of songs: "You've Lost," "Is It Better," "Grey to Black," which are thrashers, then there is "Death of a Friend" which is moody and slower, then there's "No Reasoning" which speeds things up again. The 45 is dedicated to everyone supports their scene; well said…

Great DC hardcore with a twist to it. Starts out with a real scary intro on "You've Lost," the first song. "Death of a Friend" is sort of like TSOL's "Weathered Statues." Real great record all around, but I understand Double O have since broken up. Too bad.

[If you] missed Double O's two nights at Finder's last summer, you really blew it, as this EP will prove. This stands up with the rest of DC's best. Some great thrashers here along with "Death of a Friend," which is moody and quite different from what you might expect (who's on sitar?).
