Description
Doug Watkins Quintet featuring Yusef Lateef Soulnik Prestige New Jazz 8238 MONO RVG stamped first pressing with Herman Wright, Hugh Lawson and Lex Humphries. This is one of 2 LP's released under Watkins' name and is very nice and clean for the LP, the cover has a piece of clear tape across the top to repair a seam split. 2 weeks ago a shrink wrapped copy of this same LP sold for $1000 and this one is the same record and same clean condition, just not shrink wrapped like the other one was. LP is play graded, tested and bought from a major record dealer on the east coast for a LOT of money, so please bid early and often. See all the photos above. This is the original, mono deep groove RVG stamped first pressing from 1961. Herman Wright's bass work behind the cello work of Watkins cannot be overstated. See all the photos above. Watkins was a major Hard Bop bassist primarily with Art Blakey and the Jaz messengers and many other groups. Shortly after this recording, he would fall asleep behind the wheel leaving Phoenix to join Philly Joe Jones for a gig in San Francisco and tragically pass away after crashing while asleep behind the wheel. Bill Hardman and Sir Roland Hanna were also int he car but they survived.
