French new wave pioneers Martin Dupont return in algophile style with You Smile When It Hurts, their first studio album in over 30 years. Born in Marseille in the early 80s, Alain Seghir and Beverley Jane Crew, joined by Sandy Casado, Thierry Sintoni and Ollivier Leroy, steer a soundscape balancing cold wave compressions with what might as well be described as synth-popping candy. Recorded at Hot Paradox Studio with strings and winds arranged by Ferdinand Chupin, 'You Smile When It Hurts', 'Reality' and 'Blue Dragonfly' hear vintage gloss and cathartic sound, treading the threshold of sonic jouissance, though the wound is tempered by Blaine L. Reininger on violin and Pierre Corneau on bass. A five-alive trust of labels runs the show: Hot Paradox, Label Caravan, Minimal Wave, L'Autre Distribution and Persona Grata, all turbopowering Martin Dupont's influence on electronic, rock and cinematic music for both long-time fans and a new generation.
