Brief Info: Two years after being sacked from Hawkwind, Ian Kilmister, better known as ‘Lemmy’ and his band Motorhead were still without a recording contract and almost at the point of calling it a day, when Chiswick Records gave them a chance to record a single and album after recording what was to be their final gig at The Marquee. The self-titled album, issued as punk rock was fully into gear, sold quite well. With minimal sleeve information, many may have presumed this to be a yet another new punk act, but this was raw, brash heavy metal and being honest not that well produced either. Hastily recorded, this sounds quite different from subsequent issues. It started a long and quite successful career for Lemmy and Motorhead still record and tour today. This copy was pressed on white vinyl and that information is printed on the cover too. An album that sounds better played at volume with a slightly muted and low-level production. Not seen one of these before pressed white. Coloured vinyl often offers slightly lower-grade sound than traditional black but way, way better than picture discs. This example plays very well indeed with little unwanted, very minor surface sound traces on first song, but the music mostly masks any minor sound. Certainly one for the collector and the record itself looks little played.

Cover Grade and Format: Near Excellent: a single matt finished cover with the ‘White Vinyl Fever’ information printed on the cover, this is NOT a sticker. Printed and made in England by Robert Stace.

Cover Front: A fairly basic cover but including the famous Motorhead artwork. Slight rubbing traces and one moderate crease near the left corner, others are fine edge hairline types. Generally clean, fresh and ‘attractive’.

Cover Back: Mild rubbing around the rim shpe but mimimal traces of any inkloss, so the mildest form of ringwear only. Again a few light creases and faint surface marks. A cover more often seen with deep penetrating ringwear, this has avoided it well overall.

Top Edge: Little wear at all.

Bottom Edge: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with no wear or feathering and guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid but thin, straight with little compression or wear, all text is unworn.

Corners: Any tip rubs are small, all retain very fine shape.

Cover Summary: One of the better Motorhead debut album cover I have seen and my first with the white vinyl reference. This modestly blemished example should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: The original black unlined inner is in EX++ condition. Just light record impression, no noteworthy creases and all edges solid and unsplit. The open window is immaculate with no wear or damage at all.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: As best as I can tell – white vinyl slightly harder to scrutinise – this looks almost as made so will grade Mint(-). A superbly interesting visual copy that is very clean, shiny and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This far more unusual version of this record plays very well, a little minor surface sound was just noted on the first song as mentioned above, but this hardly unusual from coloured vinyl. This has no distortion, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is fine but a slightly muted recording that benefits from being played loud. Not the widest dynamic range I have ever heard being honest, but the music is very raw and basic anyway, fans will know what I mean. Early Motorhead were hardly polished and their early fans or those who bought on speculation were rarely hi-fi buffs. Few non-black copies will outperform this white pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been mainly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Little, indeed if anything really spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this landmark debut album. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended.

What you see is what you get and scanned labels will give a more accurate representation of the genuine colour than flash photography where light is variable. I cannot guarantee total accuracy for colours however but most will be very close. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
