The Eagles began recording their third album in England with producer Glyn Johns, as they had their first two albums, but abandoned the sessions after completing two acceptable tracks. Johns, it is said, tended to emphasize the group's country elements and its harmonies, while the band, in particular Glenn Frey and Don Henley, wanted to take more of a hard rock direction. They reconvened with a new producer, Bill Szymczyk, who had produced artists like B.B. King and, more significantly, Joe Walsh. But the resulting album is not an outright rock effort by any means. Certainly, Frey and Henley got what they wanted with "Already Gone," the lead-off track, which introduces new bandmember Don Felder as one part of the twin guitar solo that recalls the Allman Brothers Band; "James Dean," a rock & roll song on the order of "Your Mama Don't Dance," and "Good Day in Hell," which is strongly reminiscent of Joe Walsh songs like "Rocky Mountain Way." But the album also features the usual mixture of styles typical of an Eagles album. For example, "Midnight Flyer," sung by Randy Meisner, is modern bluegrass; "My Man" is Bernie Leadon's country-rock tribute to the recently deceased Gram Parsons; and "Ol' 55" is one of the group's well-done covers of a tune by a singer/songwriter labelmate, in this case Tom Waits. The title track, meanwhile, points the band in a new R&B direction that was later pursued more fully. Like most successful groups, the Eagles combined many different elements, and their third album, which looked back to their earlier work and anticipated their later work
(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY WILLIAM RUHLMANN, ALL MUSIC GUIDE /ALLMUSIC.COM/)
This album, which preceded "Hotel California" by about two years, was the first to help EAGLES fetch the multi-million-copy-sold gold RIAA award certificate. However, it is a much, much better album than anything they would go on to record in their later years. And you have not lived until you've heard Eagles harmony-vocalize to "The Best of My Love" , or the cover of Tom Waits' "Ol' 55" , as well as some little-known gems such as 'My Man' or 'James Dean' in original, warm, analog sound. If you miss this one now, you won't find another copy one of these nights, or, for that matter, any time soon. Track listing: Already Gone --- You Never Cry Like A Lover --- Midnight Flyer --- My Man --- On the Border --- James Dean --- Ol' 55 --- Is It True? --- Good Day In Hell --- The Best Of My Love
THE WHITE LABEL PROMO, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed to the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

· CONDITION:
· RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant). For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b) The record comes in the original (all-black) stock inner sleeve.
(c) The album comes with its original poster intact
(d) White Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 100:1.
(e) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· COVER
THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- The previous owner taped ALL FOUR seams (top, bottom, spine, opening) with a piece of transparent scotch tape (the tape covers full length of all four seams) APPARENTLY AS A PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE AGAINST POSSIBLE SPLITTING -- THE BUYERS SHOULD NOTE THAT NONE OF THE SEAMS ARE ACTUALLY SPLIT. The tape may be possible to remove with some effort, but we did not attempt to.
- Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3
- Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record), probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.
- Front cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting)
- Cover has one corner slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)
- Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging. (nothing significant)
NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:
- No split seams
- No cut-out (drill) holes.
- No cut-out corners
- No saw-marks or indents
- No writing
- No stamps
- No peel-off marks
- No mold or mildew spots
- No stickers or labels
- No water damage
- No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or cuts.
- No warping
- No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover
- No glue traces or wax residue.
- No bar codes
- No RIAA stamps or stickers.
