‘Sweet Black Angel’ captures Earl Hooker in the studio around 1969, with an unidentified backing band. It feels like an insight into the moment, rather than having any ambitions for a wider album. This is suggested by the track titles, many of which sound like practical afterthoughts (‘Shuffle’, ‘Funky Blues’), while the album cover is a curiously random photo of Earl, holding an umbrella, and getting into a car. However, the music is a lot more inspired than this nondescript presentation might suggest.

With the exception of ‘Sweet Home Chicago’, all the tracks are instrumentals, which play to Earl Hooker’s strengths as an inventive guitarist, as his voice was not a strong one. The material also shows his versatility to move through different styles; from slow blues, to boogie, to the appropriately-titled ‘Country and Western’. His guitar playing is characteristically light, dextrous, and sharp. He even adapts James Brown’s ‘I Feel Good’ into a spry instrumental, and it is this track that best represents his talent as a creative stylist, as he plays nimble slide guitar before throwing in some wah-wah effects for good measure. He also revisits the title track, previously recorded by his mentor Robert Nighthawk, and explores elements of RnB with ‘Cross Cut Saw’ and ‘The Mood’ (which is catchy but far too brief).

The album is a concise one, at less than half an hour, but it captures some of Earl Hooker’s versatility as a musician. He doesn’t try to bring the house down with this record, but is in a relaxed and playful mood; throwing in subtle, entertaining hooks to put his own stamp on the songs.

·       THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a small cutout hole in one of the corners

-        Visible shelf wear noted on the seams

-        Cover has all four corners slightly worn / dinged (just a beginning of the split seams in two corners).

-        Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

-        Front cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-        Cover has a tiny "wrinkle" (crease)  in one of the corners.

-        Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.
