EARTH & FIRE, DEBUT,1971, NEPENTHA LP, ROGER DEAN DESIGNED, DIE-CUT, GATEFOLD SLEEVE
It is a real pleasure to be able to offer for auction this incredibly rare example of the very first LP from the legendary Dutch Prog-rock band Earth and Fire on the Nepentha label. Now firmly established as one of the icons of the Progressive Rock collectors’ world, this original, Nepentha LP is as good a copy as is ever likely to turn up.
Collectors of this band and genre will need no introduction to either the band or their music and I will not insult anyone’s intelligence by eulogies concerning the quality of the music or the genuine rarity of this piece of Prog-rock, vinyl history. The really important thing is the condition of the item.
Sleeve Condition: Very, very little wear to give away its age. The delicate, unlaminated, die-cut front is entirely undamaged. Few survive in this condition, the die-cut nature of the sleeve making it such a target for accidental damage from other LP covers being pushed in beside it in big collections. The corners are square, free from creases and show almost no bumping and the inside gatefold is clean, unmarked with no writing, previous owner’s names or creasing of any sort. Record Condition: It’s quite clear that the record has received little if any play at all. There is an almost unnoticeable ‘ghost’ discolouration in one place on side one, not a scratch or even a scuff, just a very, very slight difference in the way the light shines on the surface. I suspect this is actually in the vinyl on an otherwise unblemished record. I mention it only because otherwise this is such an unflawed example. Nice, bright, glossy vinyl, free from scratches or playing damage and close to a top copy: It plays perfectly without musical defect or audible crackle or background noise from groove dirt. Ex+.
The Nepentha Earth & Fire album has achieved something of an almost mythical status among prog-rock fans and record collectors; not without good cause as far as the music is concerned. In addition, the status of the superb gatefold sleeve, this being one of Roger Dean’s first covers, is legendary.
What matters to the serious collector however, is firstly, to acquire an original issue, particularly with something as sought after as this, and secondly to find one in the best condition possible, this seminal LP being the cornerstone of this highly collectable label.
This magnificent example is in lovely condition. Both sleeve and vinyl are Ex+ and I doubt that another copy of this highly desirable and very, very scarce album will surface for auction in a very long time. Bid with confidence.
