Label/Format: Liberty – intense black and silver format with matt smooth surfaces. Side one has the embossed ‘K T’ tax letters, both of which are pristine.

Label Conditions: Both in supreme condition for such an old album. Not a very first issue, those were on London Records, but still very early copy from around 1963 in beautiful visual and playing condition. Very clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle marks tiny, very few and faint – hardly any at all, and no wear around the hole area.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Brief Info: One of the rock n roll all-time greats, so sadly lost at the young age of 21 after a car accident. A young and dynamic performer, his music and recording style ahead of its time, this set has magnificent sound. This vintage album includes his most famous singles and some B-sides on a brilliant heavyweight mono album. Not a first issue from 1960, but how many of those will still survive in playable condition? In 1960 when this was first issued, most would have been subjected to the most basic super-heavy-tracking-weight needles of the time – many would have still be using steel pin type pickups used to play 78 rpm records on. Were things that much better in 1963?, well debatable, but this record appears hardly played and sounds fantastic – that a stone-cold fact. Fourteen brilliant songs in proper mono, no electronic processing for fake stereo, this album sounds just the way it should. An album that offers the best from this legend, his music help pave the way for what about to follow and is essential, if only one is wanted for your collection, this has to be it.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single format with front laminate. This covers all folds and ends on three external rear flipbacks. The main back panel is matt and quite smooth. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day, includes a white heavy-duty polylined inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: The laminate retains excellent shine, freshness and clarity with minimal hint of dulling and no lifting. Very few marks or creases and only a hint of rim impression under light from the thick heavy record. This is very impressive indeed.

Cover Back: Age-defying and attractive with minimal discolouration to the white surface. Hardly creased or worn, this is superb. The very wide flipbacks are equally impressive with little to fault at all. The ends clean with no burring or lifting, even the laminate on them is shiny and clear – most discolour and become dirty with grime which this has avoided.

Top Edge: Unworn and smooth, the laminate unscuffed or chipped, very slightly bowed being critical of a cover this great age.

Bottom Edge: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with barely any wear. Any thickening or burring minuscule, barely any at all, even as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced, the exposed strip on the front where the laminate ends still very much present and unworn.

Spine and Text: Also very impressive: largely straight, solid with minimal compression, just one faint scuff trace which registers little. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate.

Corners: Any tip rubs are tiny and light, excellent shape with no bashes or dinks.

Cover Summary: A superb all-round example of this iconic 1960’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find better. This beautiful item should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): a heavyweight record needs a heavyweight inner sleeve. This a white polylined inner that is UK patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text. Two undamaged window circles, the lining clear, two neat corner creases – these folds – often done deliberately to stop the record sliding out of the cover. And no edge splits or repairs. Some discolouration to the paper which can no great surprise on a record this age.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a superb visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and heavily pressed. A very early black Liberty record with minimal plays on all evidence, any surface trace marks very few, equally light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. No penetrating stylus scratches at all, remarkable for its era, this is an exceptional mono record. Visually a super example that should please most-all collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This indispensable compilation album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free mono sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few copies that age will outperform this still early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
