ELEKTRA RED WHITE 2410-009 THE STOOGES FUN HOUSE FIRST UK ISSUE NOV 1970 LP NM

Now this rocking-horse-poop rare LP has an odd pressing history in the UK.  It has received only three UK releases before 2003, when it briefly appeared as a picture disc.  The first appeared on the Elektra red and white label in November of 1970, the month after Tim Buckley's eternal Lorca.  It was not well received.

Here's the history as I have worked it out:

UK ELEKTRA STANDARD  2410 009 Red label, MADE IN ENGLAND,

MFD BY POLYDOR RECORDS LTD with 241000 9 A/1 111, B/1 111 matrices; Withdrawn?  Pressed autumn 1970, bag date code 10.70, released November 1970.

Second press transitional EKS 74071 Butterfly label, Kinney credit line on jacket with original Polydor 241000 9 A/1 11, B/1 11 matrices; pressed by CBS using the original Polydor metalwork soon after Kinney moved pressing plants to CBS on January 1st 1971.

The 2005 deluxe double set LP reissue states the record was ‘first issued’ as EKS 74071 December 1970.  This is clearly nonsense.

After the Kinney buy-out completed the remaining stocks of second pressing above appeared stickered with a K- number.

Third press EKS 74071 Butterfly label, Kinney credit line on jacket and K 42055 A/2 B/2 matrices – pressed by CBS after June 1970 and still in stock in early 1973.  Some copies used remainders of the second pressing jacket adorned with a K42055/EKS 74071 sticker.

This is the true first UK issue.  The record is beautiful NM, but for a light bag rash (ripple transfer from the original polylined inner) to side 2 only (see pic 10) which does NOT affect the sound at all. The listening experience is second to none, top NM, no surface noise, no clicks or pops at all.  No spindle marks on the labels. Replacement new lined innerbag, but the original lined bag with the second catalogue number inscribed to corner for shop filing (why the second?) is included.  The ridiculously flimsy, lightweight, unlaminated non-gatefold jacket (there was no UK gatefold until the deluxe double in 2005), bearing the unique ELEKTRA STANDARD logo, which is unique to this issue, at lower right recto, has light edgewear  and a small label burn to upper right, so Ex-.  So rare, so brilliant.  Compared to this record the Velvets albums sold shedloads.

A truly essential record....

GRADINGS:

MINT (M): Brand new and unplayed. Perfect, no indications of being handled or played. I only use this grading if I know for sure the record has not been played.

NEAR MINT (NM): The record is virtually flawless, clean and shiny.  Very minor, barely visible innerbag wear may be permitted, but no scratches. The disc should play with no audible noise. Jacket is as close to perfect.

EXCELLENT (EX): Record plays near perfectly, but may have minor paper scuffs that do not interfere with the sound quality. There can possibly be a non-sounding mark or two but nothing that affects play. Record is clean and shiny.  Any issues with the jacket will be minor and described.

Because I have never collected records that are a lower grade than EX, you won?t be finding any for sale here.
