Denn „The River In Reverse“ klingt vorzüglich, die Räumlichkeit und Instrumentenabbildung ist für eine „normale“ Industriepressung außergewöhnlich gut. Über Costello muss man nicht mehr viel sagen, der Grammy-Gewinner hat in seiner langen Karriere schon so viele Projekte mit den unterschiedlichsten Musikstilrichtungen realisiert, dass ihn vom Klassikfreund bis zum New Waver und Blueser jeder schon einmal kennengelernt hat. Nun hat er mit der New Orleanser R&B-Legende Allen Toussaint zusammen diese Doppel-LP eingespielt, unterstützt von den Impostern, The Cresent City Horns und Antony Brown (Fender Telecaster). Toussaint, selbst in der R‘n‘R Hall Of Fame aufgenommen, steuerte einige seiner Kompositionen bei, andere Stücke schrieb er mit Costello zusammen. Mit Bläsern, Piano, Wurlitzer und Hammond-Orgel lassen sie die Hörer zwischen klassischem Songwritermaterial, R‘n‘R, Blues, Gospel und Soul schwelgen und immer wieder in die schwülstigen Rhythmen von New Orleans eintauchen.
