Completely unknown but absolutely top shelf UK baroque popsike gem from Emil Dean (Zoughby), backed (anonymously) by the UK band Nirvana. "Lonely Boy" is the standout, a lilting bit of Hammond-stabbing lightly orchestrated weepy popsike that wouldn't have been out of place on STORY OF SIMON SIMOPATH or any of the first three Moody Blues albums for that matter. Both songs, by the way, were written by Patrick Campbell-Lyons and Alex Spyrohoulos, otherwise known as Nirvana, and produced by Muff Winwood. So how did some schmuck named Emil Dean (Zoughby) get to record two Nirvana songs, backed by Nirvana, get big time production and a major label to boot? Beats me, but a cursory Google check reveals Mr. Dean to be a South African artist who occasionally sang in London stage productions. Anything more, you're on your own. I can also tell you this is a staggeringly RARE single too - his "Monday Tuesday Wednesday" is FAR more common - and it took me YEARS to find this one single solitary copy after reading this intriguing review on the Marmalade Skies website (and any review that uses the Blossom Toes as a comparison gets my curiosity up):

'This Is Our Anniversary' and 'Lonely Boy' were recorded by Emil Dean and issued back-to-back on 45. Emil Dean (he also recorded as Emil Dean Zoghby) cut a few other none too interesting singles. The topside, 'This Is Our Anniversary', is in his usual middle-of-the-road vein, and despite an interesting arrangement and good performances, has little or nothing to make it stand out from the interminably crowded ranks of mawkish late-60s balladry. On the other hand, and on the other side, 'Lonely Boy' is thankfully rather fine. Despite a vaguely MOR structure and un-hip vibe (think: some of the tracks on the first Blossom Toes album), it is introed and decorated with hypnotic organ, and includes cornet, some breathy harmonies, and cool jazzy tempo changes. It has, in all its lushness, style and decidedly un-manly tone very much of a Nirvana feel about it, particularly of their more over-produced and less beaty songs. Change the vocalist (although Emil is not a thousand miles away from Patrick) and pop this excellent slice of baroque chamber pop on 'All Of Us' and no-one could ever think it out of place. The final instro fade is most especially nice: the strings move up front, the Hammond shimmers and whirs, the drums break into loud rolls... It may be a softy (certainly not a rocker), and like much Nirvana material will be over-eagerly dismissed by some as "too saccharine for many psychsters' tastes"; but with its fey lyrics and camp aura, 'Lonely Boy' is much deserving of at least a nod of approval from the foppiest admirers of UK pansy pop.

I try to grade as best as I can, and I list as many blemishes/imperfections I can find (writing, ringwear, scuff marks, etc.) – Also, please note that I DO listen to these albums – I may not listen to every track, but my grades are based on LISTENING, not just looking at it, since chances are you’ll be listening to the record you buy, not just looking at it.  Most of the albums I sell are the ones I’ve enjoyed for years – and I treat my records with kid gloves.  But sounds speak louder than words, so check out the sound clips below – they’re from the actual record you’re bidding on.

Listen, I buy a bunch of records too (when I’m not getting outbid at the last second, which is more often than not) – and I know what it’s like to get a rare, one-of-a-kind album packaged dangerously in a flimsy bubblewrap package.  I hate that too.  So rest assured, I ALWAYS package albums with stiff cardboard reinforcements, same for 45s.  And yes, the records are removed from the sleeves (for albums).  I ship out once a week, every Friday, because I have a regular day job.  But I’d be willing to give that up if you’d all be so kind as to bid my items up to stupidly high amounts.
