Here you go, EMPEROR fans! The most famous / well known and legendary Norwegian black metal band of them all, EMPEROR, released arguably the most important black metal release of the 1990's Scandinavian scene in the year 1992, with their full-length (time-wise) demo LP, the legendary "Wrath Of The Tyrant" demo release. Over the years, there were numerous editions of this classic demo / album released, in varying degrees of rarity / conductibility. Us U.S. / Canadian collectors were more likely to get our hands on one of the numerous CD and cassette pressings released on (now-defunct L.A. based label) Wild Rags Records that were flooding the underground circa 1994-1995. Some of us were lucky enough to get our hands copies of the more obscure versions, such as Polish cassette label EASTCLAN's edition (a label run by Rob Darken from GRAVELAND) , or the absolutely amazing looking original LP edition released on Metalion (of Slayer Mag's) label, HEAD NOT FOUND, but very, very few people possessed a copy of the O.G. version, released by the band themselves, when they were 15/16/17 years old...photocopying a cut-n-paste layout onto 8.5 x 11" sheets of photocopy paper, folding them just-so, and sticking a dubbed cassette with an address on it somewhere (most likely) and putting it in the mail with a letter, sending it to 'zines, labels / distros and tape traders around the world - hoping someone would notice. Little did they know, yeah, we fu^kin' noticed!
So - that brings us to my auction (sorry for the diatribe above, but I'm a little sentimental about this release, as it's the record that quite possibly ruined my life as a teenager, and for that, I'm forever indebted to it in the best kind of way.) What I have here is a copy of that O.G. "Wrath of the Tyrant" cassette and a matching (and almost equally rare / obscure) limited edition (500 units) picture LP, released in 1997 on obscure label, Damnation Records (under license from Head Not Found / Norway - this is the only other version of this classic album featuring it's pinnacle art design, in my opinion anyways, which also appeared on the LP jacket of the HNF 12" LP edition from '95) This picture LP quickly vanished and it's been heavily sought after since. This copy is in pristine condition and has been played only a few times. Kept in extremely looked-after / cared-for condition for the time I've owned it. Won't find a much cleaner copy.
The tape: So, I can't speak to the absolute dead-certainty of the authenticity of this cassette. I'll be honest. I received this tape via a tape trader around March, 1996 and I've had it forever. I actually made some copies of this "original" for some friends last year (10-15 copies, they look identical more or less, just newer). Does the fact this one is old and MAY have been dubbed by a band member or close associate VS some other headbanger underground maniac in Europe in the mid-90's make that much of a difference? Not to me. Maybe not to you either. For me, this is all about the aesthetic of the layout. The cut-n-paste / primal presentation suits the music perfectly. To know these guys were literally young highschool students when they did this (and had ALREADY done Thou Shalt Suffer with fellow future black metal heavyweight, ILDJARN, in '90/91!) is absolutely insane. These guys changed the metal world forever with this release. I don't see too many of these (originals or otherwise), but what I can say is that this copy is the closest to authentic I think one will get without having a copy handed to you by a band member, certifying that they dubbed it on their crappy boombox in '92 VS whoever may have dubbed this particular copy (Which still plays and sounds great, by the way!) This auctions value is more in the picture LP, I'm throwing this in as a bonus so that some other early Emperor enthusiast, such as myself, can enjoy the albums two coolest visual presentation simultaneously and listen to it on whichever preferred (analog - only!) format they'd like. The only way to go with this classic.
Hit me up if you'd like to ask any questions or receive more detailed info or photos of either item. I'm happy to help in anyway I can!
