This is a sublime concerto by Ian Curzon (1907-82) and Benjamin Britten (1913-76). When Curzon passed away at the age of 75, obituaries in Britain and America described him as "one of the world's greatest pianists," and in Germany he was highly praised as "a master pianist capable of expressing pure and noble beauty." He was a leading pianist of the 20th century and, in 1977, was the first pianist in Britain to be knighted. However, he is surprisingly little known in Japan, as he never visited the country. This may be related to the fact that he had few recordings. However, this was underpinned by his consistent artistic vision. Born in London, Curzon made his debut at the age of 16, recognized by the renowned conductor Henry Wood. His exceptional talent attracted attention, and from 1928, he studied for two years under the master Schnabel, who made significant contributions to the popularization of 20th-century Classical music and Schubert. After making his Berlin debut in 1930, he gained fame and international recognition by performing mainly in London and throughout Europe from 1932. At that time, he performed many brilliant Romantic pieces, but later he narrowed his repertoire to the Classical period and early Romantic composers such as Schubert, Schumann, Liszt, and Brahms, which he had consistently focused on since the beginning of his career, further enhancing his reputation. In the 1970s, he performed almost exclusively Mozart and Schubert, becoming such a Mozart specialist that he performed at the Salzburg Festival, held in the heartland of Mozart, from 1955 to 1978.
