Description
ESTHER PHILLIPS
JUST SAY GOODBYE
Little Esther Phillips is a great example of an R&B artist who had a huge career for 20 years in the R&B charts, but never seemed to make it over in the pop world. Starting back in 1950 when she was the new kid over at Savoy Records, her gutsy approach to R&B put her ahead (in style) of acts like Ruth Brown and Laverne Baker.
She fell off the charts for nearly a decade after 1952, but kept making records for a varity of labels. Her real comeback was in 1962 when she cut a new version of the country tune "Release Me" for Lenox Records. This was one of her other singles on her comeback trail after she signed with Atlantic Records (1964-'67).
This one if from January of 1966 and is her magnificent track “Just Say Goodbye.” It’s not only a great northern soul groove, it’s quite the mod classic too. On the flip is “I Could Have Told You” and this is a rarely seen stock copy.
