Today, for your consideration, is an ethnic Spanish Mexican 78rpm phonograph recorded in 1929 by Trovadores Tamaulipecos, famous Mexican vocal and guitar quintet.

Description:  

The famous and legendary quintet Los Tovadores Tamaulipecos (1926-1935; comprised of Lorenzo Barcelata, Alberto Caballero, Ernesto Cortázar, Andrés Cortés Castillo and Antonio García Planes) was created to promote Mexican vernacular music in the state of Tamaulipas and the rest of Mexico.  However, they not only helped to spread popular Mexican music nationally, but also internationally, thanks to their commercial recordings (such as the one featured here) and live and film appearances.  In the late 1920s, the ensemble toured Mexico, Cuba, and the U.S.A. (New York and New Orleans).  In the 1930s and 1940s, the music director of the quintet, Lorenzo Barcelata became one of the most important music composers of Mexican vernacular music.  He composed the music for many now classic Mexican films, including Allá en el rancho grande, A la orilla de un palmar, Bajo el cielo de México, and Jalisco nunca pierde, among others.  The two music examples on this record were composed by the same Barcelata: Virgencita Mia, a bambuco (a Colombian music genre introduced in Mexico in 1908, which became a very popular dance in the Yucatan); and Como Gota de Agua, a bolero (one of the earliest Mexican boleros on a shellac record).  What a bargain again!!!

Condition: 

EX (Excellent) An excellent copy with some minor groove wear.  Mix of gloss and moderate surface noise with the usual background hiss and occasional pops.  Both sides play very loud and clear (please see pictures).

78s Grading:  I grade items visually, noting any defects such as scuffing and scratches, rim chips, or flakes, and hair or lam cracks.  In addition to the visual grading, I also offer a brief description of the overall sound quality as I hear it on my record player and sound equipment.  I do not use any state-of-the-art digital audio restoration software that removes hisses, clicks, pops, and crackles.  Those sounds are “natural” in many 78s as they were recorded (by acoustic or electric means) and pressed with technology developed in the late 19th and first half of the 20th centuries.

As many avid collectors know, many of these 78 rpm discs are extremely rare, hard to find, and in many cases may be unique examples.  Thus grading them with a letter or number is beside the point.  Recognizing that these recordings are exceptional, I was just lucky and happy to find a playable copy, no matter in what condition I found them, and I hope you will be too.
