Hello again, today also for your consideration is another rare phonograph by the legendary Cuban Sexteto “Occidente.”

Description:

This is another scarce rare recording by one of the most famous Cuban sextets of all times. This phonograph was recorded in New York in 1926.  This is another disc by one of the most influential Cuban son groups of the late 1920s. This vocal and instrumental sextet was led by one of the most important singers in the history of Cuban music, Maria Teresa Vera.  She started her recording career in the early 1900s and became one of the first Cuban female musicians to achieve international fame and recognition. This record includes two sones, both examples were written by the legendary bass player and later music director of this sextet, Ignacio Piñeiro. The son “Cabo de guardia” was also recorded by Sexteto Habanero in the same year for the Victor Company.  Great examples of Cuban son dance music!!!

Condition: 

(VG). This 90-year-old phonograph is in average good condition with surface scuffs and scratches.  General use has dulled the finish somewhat (please see pictures).  Surface noise with hiss and pops/crackles but music (clearly distinguishable instruments and vocals) level is still higher than surface noise.  There is a needle dig on “Cabo de guardia,” between the ten and eleven o’clock, and a rough needle run on “Meneito suave,” around the five o’clock area that looks like a hairline crack but I believe is not (see picture #3).  However, music does not skip or repeat.

78s Grading:  I grade items visually, noting any defects such as scuffing and scratches, rim chips, or flakes, and hair or lam cracks.  In addition to the visual grading, I also offer a brief description of the overall sound quality as I hear it on my record player and sound equipment utilizing a 78 cartridge/stylus.  I do not use any state-of-the-art digital audio restoration software that removes hisses, clicks, pops, and crackles.  Those sounds are “natural” in many 78s as they were recorded (by acoustic or electric means) and pressed with technology developed in the late 19th and first half of the 20th centuries.

As many avid collectors know, many of these 78 rpm discs are extremely rare, hard to find, and in many cases may be unique examples.  Thus grading them with a letter or number is beside the point.  Recognizing that these recordings are exceptional, I was just lucky and happy to find a playable copy, no matter in what condition I found them, and I hope you will be too.
