Description

Extremely rare 1964 12” vinyl mono Canadian pressing of the compilation “Folk Songs” from Lyman Potts’ Canadian Talent Library featuring Malka and Joso, Adam Timoon and a young 25-year old Gordon Lightfoot.

Created in the early ‘60s primarily to bring a measure of truly Canadian programming to private (commercial) radio stations, the CTL became a unique showcase for Canadian singers, musicians and song-writers and kick-started the Canadian recording industry. In a span of 23 years, from 1962 to 1985, CTL produced 268 stereo LPs with over 3,000 selections. The first 79 — of which, this recording #M-1049 was the 49th — were made as electrical transcriptions and could be used only by CTL subscribers. These discs were only distributed to subscribing radio stations and were not commercially available to the general public, making any surviving copies very scarce.

The record is notable for containing some of the earliest released recordings of the legendary Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot. Legend has it that CTL “discovered” Gordon while he was performing at a coffee house on Avenue Road and offered him the opportunity to make his first record. On this record, he performs 2 originals, 3 regional Canadian folk songs and a cover of Pete Seeger’s “Turn Turn Turn”. A full year later, in late 1965, the Byrds famously recorded and released their version which reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 — by which time, young Gordon had signed a management contract with famed manager Albert Grossman (Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Peter, Paul & Mary), landed his first major label deal with United Artists and was well on his way to becoming a legend.
